Completely mine. I did base the engine off of the existing design n17 had used in the comic tho.

Also, stapler.

Interesting Ship design. Much more different from your typical Sci-Fi Cruiser Flapship.

And no, unlike some other people here, I do not think it looks like a Stapler.

Reminds me a bit of the Avenger gun-line from Mass Effect. I'm a huge fan of the Avenger's design, always have been.

Daemoria In reply to Ryivhnn [2014-09-20 09:16:19 +0000 UTC]

That's the rear end of the ship, so those are the engine arrays. It's got 3 massive turreted guns for sniping other vessels. one at the front, and two in the midsection.

Billie-Bonce In reply to Number-Seventeen [2014-09-19 17:36:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh, and I thought it's a ship named after a famous movie named after a rebel armor-clad battleship named after... Well, you know

Seriously, who would know anything about a certain (one of many) Russian battleship without that movie...Β

I've heard the name used for space ships before.Β  The name "Potemkin" was also mentioned as the name of a star ship in "Star Trek -- the Next Generation".

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Billie-Bonce In reply to larqven [2014-09-20 09:52:51 +0000 UTC]

It was also known that Darth Vader was actually a slightly distorted "Dar Veter" - the name of the protagonist of "The Andromeda Nebula" novel by famous old-school Soviet Sci-Fi writer Ivan Yefremov (and a corresponding movie which on Western measures was a low-budget one).

larqven In reply to Billie-Bonce [2014-09-20 10:12:03 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the info!Β  I've never heard of that.Β  I'm always impressed how much influence that Soviet Sci-fi has had on media elsewhere.Β

We've had a conversation about "Solaris" before.Β  After watching "The Savage Curtain" episode of "Star Trek", I'm fairly sure that that episode borrowed more than aΒ bit from the basic plot of "Solaris".

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Billie-Bonce In reply to larqven [2014-09-20 20:18:34 +0000 UTC]

Well, "Solaris" is actually a novel by Polish writer Stanislaw Lem, who certainly was one of the most famous Sci-Fi writers in the world (but I believe the fame came to him later than in 1961 when "Solaris" was written). There are three movies based on the novel, two are Soviet (of 1968 and 1972), both with great actors, but only the latter one, directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, is the famous one (by the way, it had rather high budget for that time, and not only on Soviet measures). There is an American movie of 2002, too.Β

Since "The Savage Curtain" was already broadcast in March 1969, I suppose it could be influenced by the Lem's novel but even the first of the movies probably could not influence it (though, the simple information that "the Soviets made a movie based on the Lem's novel" could do it - those creative people have to hunt the good ideas).Β

Interesting, I didn't know that there were two Soviet movies made, and so close to each other in years.

I once watched part of the Soviet versions, but have no idea which one it was.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Billie-Bonce In reply to larqven [2014-09-21 08:55:39 +0000 UTC]

I am pretty sure that it was the movie by Andrei Tarkovsky (of 1972). The first one was a black-and-white TV movie which was almost (or completely) forgotten.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

larqven In reply to Billie-Bonce [2014-09-21 09:21:57 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the information!

Doubtlessly the 1972 movie is the one that is correct.Β  I remember it being in color, complete with some vivid (if old colorΒ film) colors in the dacha scenes.

Stories where humanity is in deep space but events on earth appear to be contemporary always sort of amuse me.Β  There were some scenes of fairly contemporary cars driving into the spaceportΒ that have stuck in my mind.

The hearing of the poor pilot who first witnessed the transformed surface was interesting, and one of the scenes with a 'sci-fi' setting.Β  The attempt at a dispassionate review showing that the human mind and human perceptions might be faulty; but so is human imagination and expectations.

It's a genius novel by Stanislaw Lem, and no less genius movie by Andrei Tarkovsky. He added a lot to original novels while making screen adaptations.

It sort of gives me the impression of a futuristic stapler?

Why not?Β  It might drive some big 'staples' real fast with a railgun?

Seriously though, I do like the double hull design and the two turrets.Β  At the joint, are those rectangles doors for loading, docking or landing bays?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Daemoria In reply to larqven [2014-09-19 10:15:37 +0000 UTC]

Those are the main docking bays for the fighters, pictured in Number-17's comics. There are a lot of them on the ship, so i figure i might as well make it a bit more obvious it carries them.

larqven In reply to Daemoria [2014-09-19 17:43:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!Β Β Β  The twoΒ docking baysΒ also gives some sense of perspective.Β  The front of the ship might be a bit larger than it might appear in the pic?

Carriers hold massive numbers of personnel, so I wouldn't say that that is overstuffed at all.Β Β  Particularly as a capital ship, or a ship doing the pirate equivalent of being a capital ship at any rate.
