Description
This is something I've been wanting to try for a while - a straight recreation (as opposed to the mash-up cover recreations I've done in the past) of the cover of one of the comics that helped change me into a comic fan as a kid.In this case, Action Comics #571 - a stunning cover by Brian Bolland. I recall seeing this on the new comics rack at my comic store and being a little disturbed by it. Brian Bolland was a tough nut to crack, since my inking style is so different than his!
The original cover was created by Brian Bolland, copyright DC Comics.

Great recreation! What tools did you use to execute this? I've read Bolland is rather fond of Rapidograph pens, which explains his precise hair thin lines. That may be an avenue to pursue to really match the vibe of his lines.
Again, nicely done!!

Thank you! I used my regular #1 sable brush, and a steeaaaady hand.
Logos & whatnot done with Pitt pens and a ruler.

Augh, steady hand indeed! I half assumed the logos were added in post, makes the whole piece even more impressive! Excellent work~

This is so awesome. And that really is a cover that grabs you. Creepy as all get out. It's interesting how dialogue can really accentuate an image. The speech balloon only increases the desire to see what's inside the comic and adds to the freakiness of the image. It's a shame that you rarely see dialogue on covers anymore.

You nailed it - the dialogue/lettering does exactly that. Whoever art directed this cover was a genius.

I can imagine the actual story would've been awesome. I'd love to take a shot at coloring this.

Another good one!
Do you feel like you're improving as an artist by doing these recreations? I think that you are, I was looking at some of your older work and I think you've come along way. You're really perfecting that style of yours.

They certainly help me hone my inking by trying to replicate other artist's strokes, especially the feathering. They're a great exercise, plus they help 'cleanse the palette' after doing a page or two of my own sequentials.

Yeah, I'm still disturbed by it after nearly 30 years!

Sometimes I think of tackling a Nexus or Badger cover (or something else from one of those great 80s indy publishers like First or Eclipse) as well...

Getting in the groove of Brian Bolland is no easy task, but looks like you were really up for it. Love the work.

Thanks! He's intimidating, that's why I chose a cover of his with no backgrounds.

Good idea on that. I know you are very talented, but I would crumble at trying one of his backgrounds.
