Description This is the first of five illustrations for a new adventure anthology being put together by Van Plexico (of Sentinels fame) for Blackthorn, a character and world loosely based on Thundarr the Barbarian.

I tried a couple of subtle new things with this one... no shiny lines on the robots, shadows purely only on the contours (technique & styling lifted from Jim Starlin's awesome array of Dreadstar robots), and using a super light touch on the far background and a lighter touch than I normally use on foreground shadows.

Interesting contrast between the main figure and the background versus the robots.

Yeah, I really wanted to keep them 'smooth'.

thanks!

Love the balance the whole image has, and the non-shiny robots are very interesting and work perfectly.

Thanks! I thought about adding shadows later, but didn't want to mess it up in case I didn't like how it came out.

I really see the Dreadstar influences here, it's so sad to see most modern comics artists come from that late 90's Image/Top Cow school of art. Your style is so classic, but rings so true. Great stuff.

If I could choose who influenced me the most for hero-stuff, Starlin would definitely top the list.

Thanks!

You are very welcome. Yeah, Starlin is good, wish he'd go back to that space stuff at Marvel.

He's working on Breed III right now (I forget who publishes it)! That one's pretty spacey. I really liked the first and second minis.

I think that is Dark Horse that puts it out. I really digged his Marvel Cosmic stuff. Infinity Gauntlet is a good written book. I have that Marvel Graphic Novel version of Dreadstar, good stuff. Though I have to admit, his DC space work I treat as radioactive.

I tried reading Hardcore Station but the dang thing put me to sleep. His art was still good, though.. that was enough to get me to buy it just to look at.

Never touched that book. Good thing too. I still need to go out and get those Adam Warlock trades. Been meaning to. But never got around to it.

His manly physique and energy scimitar (no copyright infringement) would defeat any crazy robot!
