Description
This is something I've been wanting to try for a while - a straight recreation (as opposed to the mash-up cover recreations I've done in the past) of the cover of one of the comics that helped change me into a comic fan as a kid.In this case, Captain America #286
The original cover was created by Mike Zeck and John Beatty, copyright Marvel Comics.
Here is the original cover: momcomics.files.wordpress.com/β¦

Thanks!Β Zeck & Beatty were really knocking it out of the park on Cap back in the early 80s.

another nice effort-i remember being at John's house when he was inking it-you come very close to what john did-what tools did you use?

Thank you!Β Wow, how crazy!
I used a Raphael 3404 0, and a pitt pen for the logos and the crosshatching to substitute for zip-a-tone.

I love how your inking is always even more perfect than the original. Β

Now, now, that's not even true!Β Β Β
But I appreciate the thought.Β
Unless you just really like my inking style... for which I am happy

Well, your inking style is more precise, measured. Β Which, I suppose, makes sense because you're carefully emulating another work, so there's less randomness in the final product. Β That said, your inking is always precise in your own original work too, so maybe you're just a precise sort of guy. Β

Thanks, I appreciate that!Β I need to start doing some more original pages soon (one is in the hopper now), but these recreations are just so fun and satisfying.Β Plus, they look cool on the wall.

Do you sell these? Β I think they'd be very appealing to a certain crowd.

I haven't sold or planned on selling any of the recreation copies, but I've done a few 'reinterpretations' (classic covers with transposed characters or other tweaks) by request.Β Β

That's the era that I first started 'collecting' comics rather than just 'reading' them.Β It still doesn't seem like it was that long ago... but... yes it was.Β 30+ years and counting.Β Aiighh!

The hatching on the figure is really tight, well done!

Thanks!Β I tried to match Beatty's inks as close as I could.Β I don't have any zip-a-tone, so I hatch evenly with a ruler to try to get a similar effect.Β

You can make zip-a-tone in photoshop by converting a pic into bitmap, it gives you options for lines at any angle, I use it in most of my inks. Love the zip-a-tone effect.

Yeah, I guess I could do it post-scan, but I like having these recreations being all-ink.Β Including the logos and stuff.Β
