Description This is something I've been wanting to try for a while - a straight recreation (as opposed to the mash-up cover recreations I've done in the past) of the cover of one of the comics that helped change me into a comic fan as a kid.

In this case, Defenders 53 - a dynamic early Perez cover.

The original cover was created by George Perez and Bob Wiacek, copyright Marvel Comics.

Here is the original cover: images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__c…

If you do commissions let me know. I'm after having some variant covers done of early Defenders books.

I don't normally, but that sounds like a fun project!Β  What did you have in mind?

Basically taking an early Defenders issue and completely redoing it, just keeping the title and issue number. I'm a Valkyrie fan and she hardly features on the covers of the Defenders books, and when she does isΒ either tied up or being very passive.

So, for example, a variant of #8 where she isn't tied up by the Red Ghost but is giving him a good beating while the rest of the group look on in admiration! It would be entirely up to you how it turned out as long as Val was the most prominent character on the cover.

Ah, that sounds intriguing.Β  After I finish my next Portland Underground page, I was thinking of doing another cover recreation to 'cleanse the palate'.Β  Would you want the logo/icons/trade dress as part of it?Β

I'm in no rush so time isn't a priority - no, you wouldn't have to include any of those items unless you wanted to.

Could you give me an idea of your prices?

Β Β I never thought about it until looking at your recreation of it (which is awesome work as usual), but the cover of Defenders 53 is an homage to X-Men 101's cover, I think.Β

Mmm, a little bit... that 'female superhuman bursting with energy' thing sure has been done a few times since, tho.Β

Thanks!

Aw, this is a wonderful job, Chris. Superb inks.

As a side note, I thought the Red Guardian was a man.Β  Having never read that issue, is this that Red Guardian on the cover or someone else picking up the mantle?

Thanks, Zoe!Β Β  This is the 2nd Red Guardian (I believe the first, male one croaked or retired or something).Β  She made a few other appearances in the Defenders of the late 70s as well.

The Red Guardian before Tania Belinsky, Alexei Shostakov,Β was believed to have been killed by lava, but eventually returned to try and capture his ex-wife, the Natasha Romanov Black Widow for her crimes during her days as a Russian spy. He was stopped by the Widow, Daredevil, and The Avengers.

Belinsky would eventually become Starlight and a mental slave to the Russian villain Presence. It's a long complicated story (which can be read here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starligh…)), but she eventually broke away from him and joined a new version of the People's Protectorate. During a battle against the Dire Wraiths, she was accidentally sent to another dimension with the Dire Wraith Queen.

Chris, You nailed this one head on brother! Loved those early Perez covers. Seems like only yesterday(30 something years go)that I bought that off the rack!

Thanks, Rob!Β  I didn't really discover Defenders until the early 100s (I was an Avengers/Batman guy in the 35-cent era), but it was a treasure trove of weirdness!

Yep - I had room for 15 of these in my hallway.Β  This one filled the last space!Β Β  I may start doing more of them to 'rotate' in those spaces, as I am still having a lot of fun doing these.

Or, I may start doing a new project with covers, maybe some original ones.Β  Who knows!

Thanks!Β  I'm just trying to make as accurate a recreation as I can.Β  But the bronze age covers were the best!Β

Thanks, Larry!Β  For such a long-running title, there sure was a shortage of really cool covers to re-do from the Defenders, though.

You are welcome. You are right, there really isn't many good Defenders covers, glad you found a good one to re-do.Β
