Description
This is something I've been wanting to try for a while - a straight recreation (as opposed to the mash-up cover recreations I've done in the past) of the cover of one of the comics that helped change me into a comic fan as a kid.In this case, Saga of the Swamp Thing #21 - "The Anatomy Lesson". I got a free copy of this comic in 1986 during a subscription promotion to Comics Buyers' Guide... ahh, the 80s. It was my first Alan Moore comic, and blew my mind. I picked up anything he did for years afterwards.
The original cover was created by Tom Yeates, copyright DC Comics.
Here is the original cover: www.hoodedutilitarian.com/wp-c…
EDIT:
Here's 's fantastic coloring job of my recreation! fav.me/d76lszn

so, is this lightbox, sheer just looking at the cover and re-creating it, scanning the work and then treating it as blue line pencil?

Kind of halfway in-between. I blow the cover up to 10.2" x 16.75, and use a lightbox to draw all of the logos with a ruler and french curve. If there are a lot of straight lines, I rule them on the lightbox as well. Then, I pencil the contours of all the 'organic' shapes so that everything's placed perfectly.
After that, I ink the contour pencils while literally holding a copy of the comic in my other hand, trying to replicate the inks by eye as closely as possible. It's a great exercise.

Maaaan, great job with this one! I did an homage cover using characters of a couple of friends, but you hit the textures on this so dead on...

Thanks! I lightbox the logos and basic contours, but the rest of it is me trying to replicate the original inks with my brush while I stare at the comic. Some of the feathering skills that the pros have are crazy difficult to try to match!

Yet another amazing choice, you really do honor these artists, and issues with your work. I love seeing these.

Yeah, I'd forgotten about this one for a while... but it is definitely one of those seminal 80s comics that reflected on the rest of the industry for decades to come.

I agree fully. Took a character that had slipped from the fragile perch and made something of him, and that was really cool.

Like old film noir with the lighting and shadow. Very dramatic!

Wonderful! I love the fact that all your cover recreations are from books that hold a special place for you. Most from an era where comics were just plain fun to read. This book was no exception.

Thanks!
If you look through my cover recreations gallery, you'll see many from the 35-40 cent era (1977-1980).. A lot of comics made a big impression on me for the first time during those years...
