Description Here's another EC-inspired piece of gift art for my dad... He's a serious Ham-radio enthusiast (nerd), and has been since like, the fifties.

I borrowed part of the title & trade dress from Harvey Kurtzman's Two-Fisted Tales, and got further inspiration from issue 33 of that title.

The scene in the new cover represents a typical Amateur Radio field day setup, with an outdoor radio rig and assorted antennas. Two of the guys (the ones on the far left and right) are based on fellow Hams I met when attending field day in 2005.

The guy climbing the antenna is my dad, circa ...right now, age mid-60's. The other, forlorn guy in the plaid coat with both arms in casts - is also my dad, circa 1971. When I was still a fetus, my dad broke both elbows in a fall - from climbing a radio antenna.

My parents relocated to the plains of Texas a couple years ago, where every so often there are tornadoes, I hear. This item provided the two-fisted adventure concept.

Like the other gift art 'covers' I've posted, this is for his xmas present, so don't tell him, eh?

Except for Archie Comics, amateur radio seems really rare in comic books or pop culture. Only "Last Man Standing", "ALF", "Contact" and "Frequency" come to mind with any mention of amateur radio. Once Herman Munster used a radio, with the callsign W2XFL/4.

My Cholla Linosyte, with her orange vest and two way radio on my page, intrigued local hams. Male operators thought her radio didn't look like any recognizable model --  but female hams liked my character design, and thought she was very pretty.

Does "Two Fisted Ham Radio" mean he has a Morse straight key in one hand, and an iambic in the other? Gud DX!

Very nice! I'm sure your dad will love it. Great job with the foreshortening and the facial expressions, especially!

Nights... weekends... My wife and I are pretty much shut-ins and we don't have kids, so I can spend most of my waking time that isn't spent at my day job doing this stuff. She spends the same time knitting.

I'm also somewhat hyperactive and fast when I actually get to laying down ink.

You MUST be fast. Scary part is that you are awesome AND fast.

Thanks, me too! I think he'll be pleasantly shocked, at least. My folks aren't used to such a personal expression from me.
