Description
A great inking exercise I did today - recreating Jack Davis' amazing Uncle Creepy heads from early Creepy Magazine, which would introduce nearly every story for several years.Related content

Your welcome! When are we going to see some Richard Corben inspired artwork?

Oh my goodness. I don't have the rendering skills for that. I'm pretty much ink-only, anyway. I love Corben, though!

Ssssssssure you do. Corben does plenty of BnW and you should have a crack at it. Would be really interesting to see you pull it off.

you make me sick-what brush this time?you give me hope that i can proficient with s brush again-there is nothing better than having a nice brush that becomes a part of you and gives you what you you want while you're ink-find that stroke and rhythm is one of the best feelings ever!

Same ol' Raphael 8404 #0 - they snap to a beautiful point better than any other brush I've tried. And they are the best I've used for doing feathering.

but aren't they small? how much of an ink load do they hold? do you have problems with the ink going to far up the brush and ruing it in a short time from not being able to clean it well enough and the ink in the ferrul drying up and splitting the hairs? i would like to try them but they are expensive and if they can't carry a decent load of ink that gets frustrating, and of course i want something that i am going to have to replace every 2 weeks----
still,if it works for (which obviously it does)God bless you--i envy the quality of your lines and wish i could throw down lines like that again! be blessed buddy-and thanks for sharing!

a friend of mine bought me some supplies 8 yrs. ago--only used the w/n series 7 #2 all these years because of sentimentality mostly-finally broke out a raphael 8408 #2---BUTTER! i felt like i was using a w/n series 7 #2 of the quality they had 25 yrs. ago!still learning a few thins with it-and my depth perception is still off-but this is SOOOO MUCH BETTER!!!

Good to hear! That sounds similar to my path - used a W&N for many years and heard enough good stuff about Raphael and now I won't use anything else.

The #0 is still 1.6mm wide at the base, it's not the smallest of that series - from there they go down to "3/0", "4/0" and smaller, etc. the "1", "2", etc are larger, but they seem a bit *too* big for me - unwieldy for thin lines.
The zeroes hold enough ink so I only have to dip after maybe 10-12 hatch strokes, or maybe one or two thick lines. I've achieved a comfort level with it vis a vis ink load.
Mine tend to last for several months depending on how the 'character' of that particular brush ends up - if I get a really good one with a nice point and even distribution, it can last up to 6-8 months. Some of 'em aren't as nice and I'll move on after a month or two. But these Raphaels are the nicest and well worth the cost. I buy mine online at dickblick.com, they have great discounts. The zeroes are about eleven bucks (normally $27 retail), so I usually buy 3 at a time and I'm set for a year or more of almost daily inking.
I use koh-i-noor ultradraw pen ink (i know, not for brushes, but it's so thick and dark!) - so I clean out the bristles after about 2-3 hours session to keep them tidy. I run water on them in the sink and kind of bang them around a bit lightly on the sink bottom, then massage some soft soap very lightly into the bristles. Then rinse and smooth out the point in my mouth.
Glad to share, I'm flattered that a pro such as yourself enjoys my work, even when I copy others on my recreations!

When you do these recreations, do you use the same or comparable tools as the original artist? Do you want to?

I use the same brush for pretty much everything I ink, since I'm most comfortable with it - Raphael 8404 #0 brush. Sometimes that's a challenge when the original artist has obviously used a nib or pen or something completely different!
Also, if there's a bit of zipatone in the original, I'll either hand-dot with a Pitt pen, or do a simulation with a pen & ruler with hatches to match the zip pattern as close as I can.

Thanks for sharing. A zero—man, that’s thin. I still haven’t tried a brush, despite loving to ink and knowing that the majority of the comics artwork I love to look at was done by brush users.

It's kinda thin, but they make several smaller like the 2/0, 3/0, 4/0, 5/0, etc. I kind of view the zero as the 'baseline' size. It's very versatile!

Thanks, Morgan! It's the first time I've tried 'covering' Jack Davis, it was fun!
