Description
I almost stayed up til the wee hours of the morning working on this. I made it to about 1am when I realized I still had about 1-2 more hours of work ahead of me. So I stopped and went to bed. I haven't been that 'ON' in a LONNNNG time. I love when artwork stops being work and just becomes art. Probably why I love working for Karl's Kids Program, Inc. Because, although it is commission work (sort of), it is FUN and CREATIVE work!!I'm actually pretty pleased with how this came out. Not exactly as I had envisioned it, but it'll do.
Spitz and Buck are (c) Jack London, author of Call of the Wild
Artwork is for the exclusive use of Karl's Kids Program, Inc. and me.

I met the founder of Karl's Kids on a German shepherd webboard.
Your best bets, if you're looking to pursue a career in art, is to draw all the time. Draw from life. Go to figure drawing classes, draw still lives. Go to your local zoo and draw the animals. The more practice you can get observing life and translating it to paper with your pencil, the better you'll get. Be open to criticism; it's hard to know what you're doing wrong and remedy it if you're unwilling to listen to others.

I just read this in class, and the artwork captures it. Splendid job.

That definitely was my favorite book, and I think you've captured this as intense as Jack London wrote it; nice job

I'd say, "More contrast!"
As always, impressive work on the fur.

LOL. More contrast on who? Lighting by fire is tough!! Worth the challenge, though.

On everyone! Everywhere!
Heheh, seriously, I think the side of the dogs away from the fire could be darker still.

I agree. Though not sure exactly how to manage it. I found it difficult enough to try and recreate Buck's coloring, just darker, without making him look to be solid black.
If it were a digital image, I'd add another layer of really dark blue on top of it. But since it's not, I'm at a bit of a loss as to how exactly to accomplish it without ruining the image. So I think I might just not touch it anymore. I was so worried I was going to goof it up the whole time already!
I love the suggestion though, Trace. And if I could manage to wrap my mind around how to do it, I would consider fixing it. But I think TJ is already using it on stuff (or will be before I get a chance to go back to it) so I will probably have to leave it as is anyway.

I understand that predicament. So many times I have wished traditional mediums had undo buttons! I've even said, "Undo! Undo!" while working, but to no avail.

Looks great! I like how you did the texture of the black dog's fur!
