They say location is everything, and you definitely had that going for you. In photography, timing is just as important, and there is no doubt the timing was spot on. The exposure was short enough to freeze the plane and long enough to avoid the uncanny effect of freezing the props in flight.
The depth of field keeps the viewer's attention on the plane by keeping it in focus (including the wingtips!) and the background soft and fuzzy.
Also, the composition is very good. In addition to getting the plane centered in the photo, it is also nicely lined up with the horizon, leaving the aircraft neatly framed between the sky and the ground.
Finally, while there are many excellent pictures of airplanes on the ground and in the air, it is rare to find a photo of a plane so flying so close to the ground. This makes for quite the impact when you see the photo mixed in with many others.

Simply put this is top draw aviation photography, matching technical excellence with that bit of luck for everything to fall into place.
In technical terms the low shutter speed gives the sense of movement and also blurs the prop, a must for top aviation photography. Add that the plane is pin sharp and brilliantly exposed, the latter a feat in itself as youβre shooting into the sun. Top this all with a perfectly horizontal horizon and you have the makings of something special. But its that bit of luck, with the pilot choosing to keep the aircraft low after take off, that takes this photo to the head (well in my opinion at any rate) of NFGβs outstanding portfolio.

Technically a great shot as usual. My only gripe is with context. The Seafire is not flying in its environment, (unless attempting a crash landing from a carrier based operation), and (really picky) the pilot ain't wearing 1940s headgear.

To be fair, the VL code on her tail signifies that she was based at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset, so though I won't argue that she of course was a carrier-borne fighter, when not at sea she would have regularly operated from land, and lets face it, the air is her true element and I'd happily have her flying over land or at sea.
As for the headgear, well I cannot disagree with you that period headgear, or at least headgear made to look period would have put the photograph in a more historic context. However, this is something that I would personally not criticise a pilot for choosing, as the bonedome is designed to protect the pilot if ever there was an incident that required head protection. At the end of the day I couldn't in good conscience criticise a pilot for choosing his safety over spectators photographs, and hey, there will come a day when these moments will be historic in their own right. In fact it's been nearly ten years since this shot was taken, so we are not that far away from that time already. My point being that I will want to remember these moments as they were at the time, and not simply as a reflection of 1940. The odd thing about nostalgia is that we often are most nostalgic for a period we didn't even experience, yet often forget to appreciate the history we make for ourselves.Β

Pardon me Daniel But Fucking WOW !!!!
I think of all the planes you have shot ( and I have seen) this right here is the baddest and best you have done hands down.

Thanks, I've tried to make it a tad better with help from a certain bit of software and more attention paid to colour correction.Β

Thank you, though it appears strange to have the arresting hook so far up by the rudder.

Judging by the photo, it looks like the hook containment unit just sits below the rudder.Β Love how the tips of the wings bend in.

Next time I'm at the fighter Factory (this weekend if I'm lucky) I'll ask TK, the head mechanic, what he knows about it

I stumbled across a video a long time ago of the Fighter Factory's P-40 doing a lower pass than this at Suffolk (Virginia) airport where they used to be based. Β I've been searching the internet high and low and I cannot seem to find it. Β Wish I could send it to you. Β A foot lower and the prop would have hit the ground

As for you, mate, an outstanding capture - simply sensational, no other description need apply.
For the pilot, well, you have probably heard the joke about old, bold pilots, and this fellow ain't one of them - this guy is about 2 metres above terra-firma, which a military flier would be busted for, and also this plane is a rare antique, an airworthy Seafire(note tailhook)...yet none of this matters - these magnificent machines make a pilot feel capable of anything, and this magnificent photo(Eye Candy for sure) is worth the effort.
Thanks for the good work - this is a treat to look at.

Flying that low is crazy dangerous
One slip of the stick and you die
Even harder doing it in a video game

"How low can you go?"
That is the question! At that speed and that low the ground effect is very strong, probably takes both hands on the stick to keep it down as she wants to go up so hard during this maneuver!
