Made this fan art because one, this is my favorite movie EVA, and two, I haven't finished a digital painting since my Laputa piece last summer ( dannayy.deviantart.com/art/Cit… ) and I wanted to get back into digital-workflow-groove with something not stressful; during my first year of university I didn't have any time to digital paint really
Trying to refine my process more; I've never gone about digital painting consistently—usually I start with a terrible sketch ( i42.tinypic.com/ibjuia.jpg ) and start painting, but that takes forever, so I tried to do complete linework first for the majority of the piece with cel-ish shading. The background I painted though without linework, so that was more fun...
PSCS3, Intuos 4, 25 hours maybe this week? Listened to all of the last Bartimaeus trilogy book during this

This is a great picture, not a single detail that seems wrong or out of place. I especially like the boiler man's surprised look as he stretches out his hand, like he expects the viewer to pay for looking at the picture. XD

Ah, that makes sense. It was a little hard to tell since his expression looks kind of panicked, but I think I just have trouble discerning his facial expressions with his giant mustache obscuring them. Thanks for telling me.

I just thought the lighting seems a bit bright (though it's well lit on the boat I'm sure) despite it being dark. so I guess more contrast would make the lighting a bit more believable? like I'd actually know how to go about doing that myself >.>

first constructive crit given to me on dA! woo XD thanks mucho, Ling! Yeah I can see whatchu mean... the lighting is maybe too even/ not contrasted enough from the light sources I've given. I think what threw me off was the reference still-frames of the boat I took from the movie, which had more light coming from more places (like more windows, more lights on the side of the ship).
