In my version of canon, this happens - but as a glitch-fever induced nightmare and since the srory goes that it was in the beta, he appears as a seven/nine-year old. But at this very moment, he wakes up to Pikachu, Eevee and Ivysaur curled up to him and Leaf shaking him. I dislike creepy bitter endings, so I decided to convert it into a crowning moment of heartwarming.
