People tend to get confused with Geisha and the real ancient japan prostitutes: The Yรปjo, Oiran, or Tayuu (different names for different ranks etc)They have similarities:
- Stunning kimono attire and hairdo
- In antique japan, they were usually sold by husbands, or parents to their "work house", making them in dept for almost their life with the owners.
- They received good education in conversation, fine arts like dance and musical instruments. Also writing and knowdledge.
- The had highests ranks inside, a famous Oiran could have the same reputation as a member of a high noble family. Some of them married very important people.
And yet, differences
- Only Oiran were the prostitutes, most of them couldnt choose their customers also, while Maiko and Geisha don't have sex in exchange of money, they can have sex though, but it keeps in their private life.
-An oiran ties her obi bow at the front, Geisha do it at her back.
- Oiran always go bare feet, Geisha with refined formal tabi-socks.

This is very good! I remember learning about the differences between geishas and the real prostitutes in the novel "Memoirs of a Geisha" It's very interesting. In order to be independent on their own, really woman in japan were driven to be geishas.
