It wasn't just gender - it was Appearance Change, too.

Well, Akatsuki "is" a female Person - and was stuck with a male Body,
due to her Character she turned into, was originally designed as a male Character,
the Opposite of Tetra from Horizon Season 2 - not a Male in a Womans Body, but the other Way around.
Akatsuki was able to return to her original Gender, but was "lolified" as well since she shrunk a lot.

I just checked Crunchyroll, and we're both right: she asks for an Appearance Change potion. This allows her to change both her gender and appearance to better match her actual size in RL.

In the novel series the anime is based on, if I recall correctly, there's man trapped in the body of a female player character. Looking at where Season 1 ended, she should turn up around the start of Season 2.

According to LN she made the TALL and male assassin to escape her reality as a loli. Technically she is the same age (or older than) Shiroe and she said it pissed her off how she was treated like a child IRL so she made her character the exact opposite.

Apparently she's 20 and Shiroe is 23. Makes sense why she made her character the way she did considering what she's probably been through.
