To be truthful, I did quite enjoy doing this! Especially the clouds!
But I much prefer doing my bright, happy, colourful stuff! This made me feel depressed afterwards! 
Look! It's little chibi Meli! When I chibi-fy her, she can wear G-lol!
Those skirts do not look good with big hips and short, chubby legs, so she doesn't wear it often!

Black is not universally a negative color. (Yes, I know that technically black is not a color.) In the Jewish faith, it denotes seeing out of darkness into the knowledge of God. In China, black signifies abundance, specifically financial abundance, as deep water is black when you look down into it AND water is necessary for growing good crops; so the more water, the better. And on the other hand, the Japanese wear white to funerals.
Regardless, I have to agree with you that this work is unique for you and I find it quite enjoyable. I guess because it is a bit reminiscent of outer space (the endless black and pinprick-holes of light); I spend a lot of time out there... mentally.
And Chibi Mel dressed that way: I find it entrancing.
