Description YAY TUTORIAL TIME! <3 I had a little bit of time today while I'm waiting to see if my current commission needs to be edited or not - so this is what you get - a slapped together tutorial on painting eyeballs :3 Enjoy.

Eye References:

Note : this was done in about 15 minutes - so no, the iris didn't get a lot of attention paid to it, and I didn't go into a great amount of detail. This is mostly so people know where to start when painting eyes and what to do with the anatomy.

this was very helpful!

btw, do you have any suggestions on drawing UBER long hair, like ankle length, without making it seem too...stiff? like this giant CHUNK of hair with a few loose bits falling down the person's back...I cant get it right without making the hair look too thin or messy.

DarlingMionette In reply to vedisdragon [2012-06-20 02:25:41 +0000 UTC]

It follows the same principle as shorter hair - just remember to put a lot of subtle curves into the direction of the hair as it falls, and every once in awhile, swing out kind of wildly from the pass to add to the volume and the "life-like"ness. Never use straight lines on hair EVER unless hair is soaking wet XD

Nice! one thing I'd like to comment that I notice in most of the really attractive eye illustrations that I've seen, is that often the area of the iris right behind the main highlight is darker than the rest of it (shadowed) and there is often an inner highlight on the iris itself opposite the main highlight (here is a good and not too complicated example [link] not necessarily following some of the other guidelines you have suggested )

I think I tend to be better at emotive eyes than realistic ones myself

DarlingMionette In reply to AnnaRDunster [2012-06-17 22:10:36 +0000 UTC]

thanks for the info ^^ unfortunately this was a 15 min speedpaint so I didn't pay much attention to the iris in particular. If this was a commission I'd have gone into wayyyy more detail with the skin and eye. This is just for the general gist of things :3

Tersakoff [2012-06-17 22:03:35 +0000 UTC]

i think there needs to be more contrast...
the iris should def be darker

DarlingMionette In reply to Tersakoff [2012-06-17 22:08:22 +0000 UTC]

XD well of course but this was a 15 minute speedpaint to show anatomy more than painting XD I did almost nothing tot he iris -_-
