Personality
Doubting - doesn't easily trust strangers, stubborn but strong willed. Unsure about himself but is willing to try to do anything for his friends. Pulls temper tantrums often. Sense of humor is very sarcastic.

Past
Ashen was separated from his mother way too early. He was taken to be trained to become a horse for one of Garnok's Dark Riders after they had found out about the magical abilities of Jorvik Wild Horses. They wanted to bend them for their own evil intentions. Garnok and their underlings decided to see how the training would affect the foal at a young age, in hopes of creating a superior horse to fight against the Soul Riders.

The training consisted of many lessons which were meant to provoke Ashen's survival instinct to make him more aggressive. Of course the young foal was confused and scared at first and it frustrated the trainers, which only lead to more unhealthy discipline verbally and physically.
If Ashen would have stayed with his mother, he would have learned to use his fire element for good but now that his heart was full of anger and fear, the Dark Riders managed to teach him to use it only for destruction.
In time Ashen became more hostile, just like they had hoped, and used it against him by making sure he knew what would happen if he were to defy them. Ashen didn't trust his trainers but felt powerless to fight back. The way he was trained was the only way he knew how to live. Ashen had no choice but to accept his fate.

When Ashen's training was complete, his Dark Rider took him out always at night so they could cause havoc in different parts of Jorvik. They managed to burn one stable down without getting caught. Luckily there wasn't any casualties even if the stable was gone for good. This caused huge fear in the villagers and the Druids were called to help investigate the incidents.
It seemed like Ashen really would become a proper horse for a Dark Rider but in the end things didn't go as they had planned.
Ashen was on a mission and the rider demanded him to use his fire magic to set the Hollow Woods on fire to cause mass panic among the villagers of Valedale. Unfortunately the Rider made a mistake on their path and accidentally trapped themselves inside a fiery vortex. Because of unproper training Ashen didn't really know how to control the flames and they both started to panic. The Rider wasn't very exprerienced with their own dark powers so they were unable to teleport themselves to safety. In their selfishness they decided to abandon Ashen. There was a steep hill inside the vortex which they were able to climb on and run away from the trap. Ashen was devasted when he realized he was left behind. Ashen screamed for help but the heath and smoke were suffocating him, finally making him collapse to the ground. Ashen was ready to give up and let the fire consume him. Luckily there was a young druid student called Inka Deersister with her teacher, Myra Deersister, who was also her aunt. They happened to see the fire and managed to get Ashen back to safety and took him to their Wild Horse Rescue Ranch in Valedale Village.
Ashen was really lucky to survive from the fire with very minor injuries but Myra and Inka realized soon how traumatized and paranoid Ashen was towards people. It was also clear it was him who set the stable on fire not too long ago. Since Ashen had been exposed to Garnok's darkness, Myra was afraid there was nothing to be done for him. However Inka didn't want to give up. She noticed how curious the young colt was towards her aunt's horse Halvar who was the same breed as he was, a Jorvik Wild Horse, though much older and wiser than him. It felt like the young one had never seen anyone else like him and was trying to figure out how the other horse who was able to use his magic abilities with ease. Inka thought maybe he deserved a second chance. She wanted to at least try to heal this horse's broken soul, just like he had done with Skye, who had suffered a similar fate in his childhood but in time he had opened his heart to them. Inka convinced her aunt to let her take care of the young Wild Horse, since it wasn't his fault he was treated the way he was. At first Myra was hesitant but in the end she gave her the permission. They were druids and hosted a Rescue Ranch after all. It was their duty to offer help to those who needed it, and this horse needed it - alot.

Taking care of Ashen wasn't easy because he didn't trust people at all. That's why Inka made the horse spend more time with Halvar first so that they could gain trust from each other and he would learn that these people were treating them well. In time Ashen found comfort in his company and started to become calmer. Little by little he let Inka come closer until he felt enough comfortable to be near her. There was lots of setbacks when it came to riding because Ashen always remembered how unpleasant the tack felt, especially the bridle and bits, and refused to work together with them. Luckily it was no problem, since most of the horses in their Ranch wore bitless bridles anyway. In time Ashen realized tack like that was nothing like what he had feared. They felt much nicer than all the other tack Ashen had tried before and with them on he didn't feel so restricted anymore.

One time Inka decided to take Ashen with him to Dinosaur Valley to fetch some ingredients for their inventory. It was good practise for Ashen to control his fire element because Dinosaur Valley was always covered in snow and they wanted to stay warm during their trip. Unfortunately it was still too hard for the stallion and while they were crossing a frozen lake, he accidentally melted the ice under their feet. Ashen panicked when Inka had unmounted him when they were struggling in the freezing water. He thought she'd abandon him just like the Dark Rider did but to his surprise she used her Soul Rider powers to lift him from the water and shoved him further away from the broken ice. It took a lot of her energy since the cold water had weakened her but she told Ashen to get away before the ice would break again. Ashen was shocked to realize this girl was actually going to sacrifice herself in order to save his life! He couldn't allow it after all the things she had done for him. Ashen ran back to her and threw the bridle in the water so that Inka could grab it. He pulled her back to safety and they escaped from their icey tomb together. Somehow Ashen was also able to use his element better to warm himself and Inka who was shivering ad weakly holding on on his back. Inka was really thankful to her friend and so was Ashen to her, even if he felt like scolding her for doing something so reckless.

Before they even noticed, Inka and Ashen were riding together every day, making steady progress and their bond become stronger. Ashen finally felt like he had a home and someone he could trust completely.

Ashen is based on the smaller Jorvik Wild Horses in SSO (here's a link: jorvikipedia.wikia.com/wiki/Jo… ) but I wanted to give him some distinctive features, as well as lore of my own.
I've planned I'd make some stories about my SSO characters since I've become so invested in their storylines But first I need to design all the characters like Inka, Halvar, the Druid aunt/teacher as well as other important characters... This might take a while
