The treatment itself won't change, but this time Thomas doesn't just stand there and take it, he actually retorts back at them; having been pushed to his limit. Plus Marion, Rex, Mike and Bert all stand up for him as well. And everyone has a My God, What Have I Done?  moment when Thomas goes missing for two nights.

Also, why don't his other Sudrian friends stand up for them? My guess is that they're too proud to admit they're wrong.

You're welcome. And one suggestion could be the reason for Thomas's treatment; either he really was causing trouble and not taking responsibility for it, or the others were blinded by pride or jealousy of his other accomplishments. You decide which is better.

To put it simply, because Mike looked incidental to Thomas in every way, he impersonated him and did a bunch of devious acts in Brighton. While he was just having a laugh, he was causing Thomas a lot of misery, because everyone thought it was him. Eventually, Thomas ran away to Sodor and once the Billintons found out everything, they sent Mike off to juvenile centre as punishment.

I'm actually planning to re-write that story.
