Description
A highly experimental new semi-abstract painting, similar to my impasto acrylics, but using oil pastels as encaustic paints! This is a 6x4 inch painting on cardboard, using cheap oil pastels (Royal and Langnickel Essentials), but melted using a metal spatula as a painting knife. The spatula was heated over a candle and then pressed against the pastels to melt them, or pressed and dragged across the surface.
I wanted to see if it was possible to do a "knife painting" with oil pastels. It is hard work, but I think is probably worth trying again...
Let me know what you think - especially if anyone has any experience of encaustic painting or melting oil pastels!

Gorgeous. I think encaustic painting w/oil pastels is a brilliant idea. it really seems to preserve the integrity and vibrancy of color when they are melted rather than pressed in and blended. The texture is also fantastic.

Definitely unique. I don't know if this is weird, but whenever I see an impasto[-like] painting, I want to touch it. I just love the texture..

Thank you! No, not weird at all, I do it all the time (with my own paintings!)

I like the effect. The colors are vibrant and the paint strokes certainly look different. I intend to try it sometime soon.

Thank you!
An old teaspoon would work fine. It is quite good fun, but not as easy as spreading thick acrylic paint!

Thanks Martyn! The colours are not as strong as I like, but I didn't want to melt all of my expensive oil pastels - these ones were stolen from the kids.
Acrylics are more fun, but there may be more mileage in experimenting with these!

Yeh well worth experimenting, but for me you cant beat jucy oil paint.
