Description Irises painted with pallet knives - same subject as one I previously did with oil pastels (see my gallery). Cryla acrylic on canvas board. 12x9 inches.

This was very experimental, but I quite like how it has turned out... let me know what you think!

I really like this. Did you paint it all in one go or did you let the paints dry at all? How long did it take you? Sorry, Knife painting is new to me so I am trying to get as much info from other painters as poss.

Well, this painting was very much a learning experience! I had painted these irises previously in oil pastels, so it wasn't a new subject, but a new challenge to paint with knives and acrylic.

I used a LOT of paint on this one. It was all painted in one session, probably about an hour and a half, and it was all wet on wet. At one point it all became a sticky brown mess, but I decided not to give up, and just plastered on more thick layers of paint.

In retrospect, I probably would have painted in stage. With acrylics, the thick paint needs overnight to dry, and now I generally paint the background or underpainting and leave the rest for the next day.

From this painting I also learned that you have to know when to STOP mixing! I think a lot of the beauty of knife painting is to leave the bold expressive strokes of the knife and not keep on mixing it to a uniform colour (which gets VERY sticky!)

The best advice is to give it a go. Start simple, don't try to do too much, and try to avoid the "sticky mess" stage. I just can't avoid using LOADS of paint, so I usually do very small paintings, but with very thick paint...

Looking forward to seeing your paintings...

Dave
