if i wasn't going to favourite it for the picture, I would favourite it for your skill in expressing your viewpoint, I have struggled in such things and so far only poetry works in pondering spirituality with me... great art !

Thank you. It is difficult expressing spiritual ideas through words - I think all of the major world religions contain profound truths, but usually it's the words themselves that get in the way!

exactly, following a book can be ignorant of the truth in many cases

Again, I like your style and this is a lovely painting. Even the birds are lovely. I like the snarky look of the largest one. And the idea behind the painting- I can only hold up my solidarity fist and say right on.

i think...that the christian viewpoint is actually quite different, but a selfless act is not with a sub desire for eternal life, but for the sake of doing what is right for knowing it is what is to be done.

Many enlightened teachers are careful to point out that nondual awareness, or enlightenment, or no-self, is not quite a "state," but an awareness or recognition of what has already always been. The death of the ego or self lets go of all attachments, including any states, and thus allows flexiblity and access to a spectrum of different states. There is nothing outside of nondual/enightened awareness; we just pour massive amounts of energy into convincing ourselves that we are other than what we truly are - free, perfect, and immensely powerful.

And of course, the death of the ego is only the beginning. Once we see through the illusion of our small "self," we reconcile the terror of the world by seeing its illusion, and thus awaken to its beauty and playfulness, and are no longer bound to the horrors of attachment.

I see your work as a beautiful example of Campbell's conception of "creative mythology" - of an artist who embarks on the journey of exploring reality beyond the bounds of tradition or conventional culture to find answers for himself. Your realms are captivating in their idiosyncracies, yet are not hesitant to draw from the rich traditions of world mythologies, such as Christianity, or from the insights of mystics.

I appreciate the reply. I am by no means religious, in fact I have found myself like yourself spending my mid to late teens to my now early twenties (twenty two) in deep thought about this life, the reasons for it, and the almost ironic gift of consciousness only to know that it will be stripped from us unwillingly. When I was just a few year younger I was vexed by this thought and tried so hard to go to church to find the answers which are to me not there. It has also been lost in the fluidity of my thoughts over the past years and only have come face-to-face with it again now in all it's reality.

Perhaps I should have articulated my point further, when I commented it was around 4am. And I have to thank you in a sense because this work of yours was a catalyst which pushed me to reconsider my knowingly decrepit agnostic belief (if you wish to call it a belief, rather the absence of one)

I find that to obtain a degree of enlightenment you need to detach yourself from the anthropocentric view we are so accustomed to take for granted. It seems it is the default mindset of most. Only the ones who have been given the gift of awareness and a higher then normal sense of intuition can move past this by trudging through the pits of despair. So in this I would like you to know that your work did not cause me irreparable harm, but has forced me to consider an outstanding puzzle of life. To actually form a consistent belief, one that agrees with my intuition.

Thanks - if I can provoke such thought and consideration I must be doing something right. Good luck with unlocking the great puzzel of existence. Maybe there isn't an absolute answer - but if you find one be sure to let me know! I think half the battle is asking the right questions, and avoiding complacency. I think we all need to review our opinions from time to time.

I'm sorry if I've caused you any offence or distress - that is never the intention of my art or my writing. If you find comfort in the concept of an after-life then by all means believe in one. Equally, I can't claim that my interpretation of 'eternal life' is an original idea - it's one I've formulated from reading about the early Christian Gnostics, from the poetry of William Blake and from various other sources. It is not 'my' opinion, but rather an opinion I buy into.
I've spent my fair share of time in the 'it of despair' – in my late teens and early twenties I was a little too preoccupied with deep thinking. However, I believe that you have to pass through this despair to attain any degree of enlightenment. Not that I’m claiming to be enlightened myself – I’m a long way off it - but ultimately if you really seek truth then you have to be willing to follow it wherever it leads you, and it will inevitably take you to the darkest of places. If you look at the Christian mythology it’s full of references to passing through this darkness before you reach the light. Jesus himself was consumed by despair and felt forsaken by God before he wasβ€˜re-born’.

Your description really tossed me into a pit of despair and has been on my mind for the past few days. The painting itself is good but the description is forcing me to think about my views about life and the afterlife. So if that was your intention you reached it with at least one person.
