thanks again.. such a simple scene to create aswell...skyline backdrop, a low wall, figure and gun..
lighting takes the longest to sort out...lighting always makes the biggest difference, get it wrong and it can look awful..

Yeah, getting lighting right with iRay is proving to be very entertaining. Back when I used 3Delight I had a basic rig I put together with a light-box of distant lights focused towards the scene and I could adjust each one to get the brightness and color I wanted from a given direction. iRay's Ubber Light really freaks me out because I keep having to figure out how to rotate it to get the main light where I want it while trying to get the light depth I want. Sometimes scenes that seem really simple though have those details - like her shiny red armor - that really stand out. It's those sorts of details I keep trying to find with the characters I build.
There are some really awesome line-drawing artists I like whose shtick is that they only color in one piece on a piece of art - it might be the eyes on one character or the hair on another - and those details really make the piece stand out.

i tend to revert to older scene setups where i've taken time to do the light then plop my current figure in and adjust as i go...saves me loads of time. some people have great imagination and must be able to hold really decent images in their heads to produce the work they do...i don't really draw now to be honest although i do sit down with the kids and doodle..just to keep my eye in..

I do that sometimes when I'm doing a related-character series. When my focus is simply trying to show off a new character concept I'm not too concerned about the background so I'll reuse ones I've gotten all set up then. Otherwise now that I've updated to DAZ4.10 after around eleven years of using DAZ2.3 and using their Download Helper to help get all those settings installed I'm trying to play with new ones as much as I can.
When I was in my teens and early twenties I used to draw a lot, just stuff out of my imagination mostly, but I've barely done anything in decades. Rendering has taken over that visual-art part of my imagination.
