I thought the item on the right was an actual object, myself.
I'm still not clear on the difference between biased and unbiased renders, but since Bryce is the only tool within my budget at the moment I'll focus on maximizing that.
I'm still using your tutorials as well. Lots of info to absorb.

As I understand it unbiased render engines attempt to simulate light and material responses exactly, where as biased render engines let you have objects that glow, materials that can reflect more than 100% of the light and that kind of impossible kind of thing. Both have their pros and cons. I don't consider either one better than the other, just require different strategies to get the best from them.

Hey there!
Your tutorial has been featured in my weekly blog: Tutorial Tuesday #27!
I'd love if you could come take a look and offer your support to your fellow tutorial writers

So that one on the right is an Octane render? David, you have achieved true photorealism there my friend. I quite literally thought you had the object 3D printed in some medium, and simply took a photo of it to show the CG and then the printed version. I can see something funny about how it's placed on the hand, but the object itself is photoreal.

I can't take much credit for the photorealism, that is down to Octanes wonderful render engine. It is a delight to use. The object is just slapped in the hand any old how, just to get a render for the video, I try to render something in the time it takes to edit the video. Likewise for Bryce, which offers a biased render to compare with Octanes unbiased results. Thank you for your kind remarks!

Well, I', also familiar with Octane, and there is at least a basic understanding of physics required to get such results. I've seen all too often people using techniques associated with non physical render engines, in Octane (too many emitter lights, non-physical correct material properties), and the results are less than realistic, regardless of the glorious path tracing algorithm. So you certainly deserve some credit here. Anyone can "f" up an Octane render quite readily.

Ah... well you see, lighting, here's the thing. What I've done is exported one of Horo's HDRI images from Bryce (using Bryce to set the levels and change the mapping from angular to spherical) and that is the only light source in this scene. IBL - it's not very directional, at least not in this case, but it does solve a lot of the lighting problems in one fell swoop. It is a shame dA does not have a category for Octane - or I've not seen one yet, it makes the renders harder to track down. Or does it and I've missed it?

There's only two groups for Octane. No category, because then they would need to make a category for every render engine. However, there are two specific groups for Octane renders...
