Nice. I remember you entered this in a contest somewhere. I see I'm not the only one that uses that hologram technique.

Thank you much! I did too and forgot that! I have been trying to figure out how to improve on doing the hologram. I changed the model in Hexagon a fair bit to get the above and of course the lighting is key. I keep experimenting. I do remember seeing you do it as well.

There used to be an x-ray shader by the same guy who did that big package of freebie shaders, but what I do now is essentially delete all the textures, color it a uniform blue, green, or red similar to what's commonly used for sci-fi holograms, set opacity to between 30 and 60% (depends on the internal structure of the model and how it looks) and then render it once in the scene, and once by itself as a stand-alone png (in the same position and from the same camera angle as the full render) on an alpha map (make sure to set the background to black).

add the png as a layer to your final render in photoshop or GIMP, and then gaussian blur it (this can vary a lot) until you get that "hologram aura". You can either try setting it to screen, addition or some other setting, or you can bring the PNG layer in again on top of the blurred layer and screen it as well. Sometimes you have to fiddle with the layers to get the look exactly right, but that's generally how I do it.
In GIMP, you can also give it horizontal video lines to represent "interference"...
Also, you can just render it as a png if you want it more see-through, and you can light it differently than everything else in the scene to show that it is a projection. I used those last two techniques in this one: [link]

Great setup and idea. I do not use pngs, forgetting about how they handle the alpha channel differently. I will try this! Very well done too. Yeah I played with doing lines like the old Star Wars holograms that where first done and cannot decide between that and more modern looking ones - as in the latest Iron Man movie.

while the lines probably wouldn't be there in holograms, they make people feel more like they are looking at something holographic, and makes it more readily identifiable to viewers.

Good point, its interesting how a bit of noise improves an image - says a bit about the medium and even the very air.

Thank you, I keep thinking that I want to do a follow up to this one day. We will see.

Hehehe, I can just imagine the conversation.
Left: "Okay, so here's where we're going to infiltrate, there's a hatch-"
Right: "Whoa, how the heck are we going to get up there? Did you see all the check-points down there?"
Middle: "That's not going to be a problem, because we're taking the ship. Just let him speak."

Nicely done! I applaud your attention to detail.
