Description
"Necro-Nazis! I hate these guys."The Fourth Reich Cult are up to voodoo mischief in the South Seas, and only Tom Katz and his sassy sidekick, Kitty Saint-Claire, can foil their nefarious schemes! DUN DUN DAAAH!
This is my first attempt in quite a while at using vectors to create poster imagery, with a limited colour palette. Primarily influenced by the poster work of Eric Tan and Kevin Dart, and to a lesser degree the great Drew Struzan as well.
EDIT: Ya know, this artwork was just made in fun over a decade ago, (and I had even written a treatment for this to become a graphic novel one day but that so far hasn't eventuated.) However it never occurred to me that we may actually see literal Nazis marching around and carrying tiki torches like this until the events in Charlottesville in the United States occurred. I sincerely hope that sort of thing doesn't escalate and become our reality, and can go back to being just a goofy fantasy concept like this.

haha. That Hitler tiki torch is really goofy looking. Looks like a real funny concept.

I've actually already got most of this Voodoo Nazi story sketched out in thumbnail form as a comic for quite a long time. I've just never found the time to really sit down at a drawing board and fully indulge in this project, flesh out the pages properly and ink them for others to enjoy. Maybe by the end of this year it'll be completed...

How many pages is it? That's not a bad time frame if it's at all long. I envy that kind of commitment too. Have so many half finished projects along those lines.

Oh I hear that, me too. The comic will be about twenty all up so a lot of work ahead of me in terms of figuring out how to ink it. However I also have to illustrate somebody else's children's book for them this year so it's going to be a bit of a balancing act for the rest of the year ...better get off devArt and go do something productive I suppose!!

Wow. Sounds like you've got your work cut out for you. Good luck!
I know what you mean... I've had devart open in the background all day today, just typing our comments between doing some work.

Ha, very cool. Nice color combination, and I love the little touch of the i dotted with the Nazi symbol.

Yeah, it took me a while before I got the colour combo right, my original colours (although similar) really weren't working out at first - got there in the end. Coming up with the whole voodoo nazi thing was just a bit of fun, I had more ideas than I actually managed to fit into the pic so I'll probably revisit these villains one day in another pic.

Thanks very much. Yeah, I just wish my artistic skills were a bit more advanced and I was faster at producing these types of artwork so that I could reveal more of the ideas I have for the world of Danger Cat. I've got nearly 10 years of ideas just bursting to get out about this character and no outlet for any of it. Haha.

Thanks dude though I really can't emphasise enough the influence an artist called Eric Tan had on the layout, check him out online. I was realy just trying to remember how to use Adobe Illustrator with this poster. A simple google search should bring up some of Eric Tan's work if you're unfamilar with him.

DC-Tiki In reply to Closs [2010-05-27 14:36:09 +0000 UTC]
Nope, I just did this for myself. I printed it out and it's stuck on the wall A2 size behind my computer at work!
However my aim is to keep making works like this until they're good enough to sell, not there yet though. Plus I have written out some drafts for stories with these Danger Cat characters, just not sure whether I really want to sit down and commit myself to a big project like that just yet.

This doesn't pale in comparison, its just a different style (one that *I* Can't do!), so please keep at subjects such as this one. It certainly has all of the necessary elements!... except maybe its missing a fedora

Thanx for the kind words dude. Yeeeeah, the fedora might be a bit too close to the original source of inspiration. Hehe.

DC-Tiki In reply to AndyWanderlust [2010-04-09 01:04:43 +0000 UTC]
Thanx very much! Yes, I deliberately restrained myself from not overdoing the details on the bottom scene as I really just wanted the viewer to notice the Hitler Moai down there and not so much the little voodoo nazi worshippers. If you look at the original sketch [link] the dudes down there were going to be lot smaller than the statue but once it was in vector I wasn't capturing the same feeling the sketch had so altered it up a bit.

I love the colours and illustrations. The text on the top left seems a bit too close to the cat's ear.

DC-Tiki In reply to RevoLeGnever [2010-03-25 15:03:53 +0000 UTC]
Hi there, thanks for the kind words. Hmmm, the text at the top does seem to draw the most criticism though I still don't really wanna lose them completely as that would require some major re-arrangement at the top of the work. I have a few ideas for some other things that bug me in this piece so when I do eventually come back to revisit it and make some improvements that troublesome text will be one of the things I intend to address.
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
RevoLeGnever In reply to DC-Tiki [2010-03-25 22:58:16 +0000 UTC]
Maybe make the cat a tad smaller? but then that might bring more attention to the volcano... hmmm... or maybe make the text bigger and set it behind the cat, covering a bit of the text but have it still legible?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
DC-Tiki In reply to RevoLeGnever [2010-03-26 08:39:20 +0000 UTC]
I did wonder if I could just run it across the top of the piece as that's where I placed it in the original thumbnail sketch. I think the choice of fonts is also at issue, if I go behind the ear it would have to be a more expressive, larger and exciting font but because it's a whole sentence it doesn't really lend itself to that kind of treatment and would probably detract away form the title far below. It's a pickle, sure haven't figured out what I'm gonna do about it yet. Thanks for the suggestions though, I shall weigh them up when I come to do the fix.

Very nice! And I recognize the font you used for the title, Feast of Flesh. I've used it so many times, it just works great here.

DC-Tiki In reply to Tarzman [2010-03-06 05:08:37 +0000 UTC]
Yes, well done! I actually saw another artist on here who was using FOF for a zombie nazi woman picture he had done and asked for the font's name because I felt it would fit right in with this artwork which at that time was a mere sketch on paper. Brilliant font.
Thanks for the compliemts as well Tarzman, I luv the jungle girl pics you do ... in fact luv all your pics come to think of it! haha.

I meant to say this earlier; it's a good composition and the color choice is fantastic. I'm not keen on the flavor text at the top but it's not terribly detrimental.
Good work.

DC-Tiki In reply to Avien81 [2010-01-04 01:39:57 +0000 UTC]
Thanks Avien. Yes, a few other people (my girlfriend included - always my harshest critic!) have said the text at the top is problematic. I guess I felt it was needed to help sell the ideas behind the poster, kind of like a movie tagline or something? I am wondering if a different font for that type would help or perhaps leaving it out altogether would be a better way to go.

Thanks Vodqa!! Probably needed some of your expertise as to how to do the pterosaurs in the background but never mind!
If I ever somehow accumulate a billion dollars to invest in my own animation studio and make a Danger Cat cartoon you can totally be the animation supervisor for all the dinosaurs on the island! Haha.

Piece by piece over many months. You can see the original sketch of this in my scrapbook on here from about May I think. That's how long I've been working on it. 5-10 mins at a time each night before going home. Ridiculous, but that's all the time I have available to go into it. Goodness knows how long before I produce another one of these.

Thanks dude, I worked hard on trying to find a colour scheme that worked effectively together - I think the final result worked. I was trying to find colours that could work for evening time but also depict a hot humid sort of tropical environment. Some earlier colour combinations simply weren't working right but got there in the end. I have a few other ideas for these types of posters too so hopefully you'll see a few more turning up on here over the next few months.
