Description
Courage To Move AlongI believe that courage is the best way to obtain what you really want.
I spent most of my childhood alone in my corner. Speaking with people was barely possible for me; I tried to avoid doing it. I was really terrified by others and my parents were sure that I was suffering from an extreme type of shyness. At this time, I already knew what I was suffering from: a lack of self-confidence.
As I grew older, things went better, in a way. Of course, children usually make fun of people who are different and I used to be their favourite target of mockery. But growing up, people also become more mature and tend to ignore those who are different. This may sound positive since they no longer make fun of you, but ignorance also means that no one cares. It means that you do not really exist. Therefore such ignorance can be far crueller than any mean thing a kid can say or do.
The only good thing I know about being ignored is that the more ignored you have been, the more surprised you are when someone finally notices you. Now you can easily understand how surprised I was when this girl walked up to me. Well, she was not a girl anymore but not a woman yet. We were both 17. She was Norah, but I did not know her name the first time she talked to me.
This day — it was a Friday — I was at school and staying alone at the library, looking out of the window, just day-dreaming. As I felt that someone was staring at me, I decided to leave my dream world and connect with the real world. To my amazement, this reality looked pretty pleasant. Norah was standing there, facing me; she opened her lips and said: "I need you. I want to be happy and I know that I need you to reach happiness."
What a surprise! This girl I had never talked with came and said I was her happiness. I know it looks like a fairytale and at this time I really thought that sometimes dreams come true. Later on Norah confided to me that she had noticed me several months ago but that she had not had enough courage to come and talk to me. She had often observed me, and she understood that if she did not take the first step, I would not do it. Therefore she mustered her courage.
Today, Norah is my fiancée and we are very happy together. If she had not had this courage, I would certainly be sad and alone right now. Thanks to Norah I have understood that we do not have to be afraid of our dreams but that we have to make every possible effort to reach them. So now I try to do my best to pluck up the courage to do everything I find worth the effort and to create a life full of happiness, not only for myself but also for us.
