Description
I was bored, caffienated from WAAAY too much sugar/chocolate/what have you on Easter. And I thought I'd pass time with a casual doodle.
Lo and behold, Meowgon Spengler came forth from my tablet.
I had a lot of fun making this one. It was just a casual doodle or speedpaint, whichever you prefer to call this.
Homestuck and Meowgon Spengler AKA Vodka Mutini are copyright Andrew Hussie

Thanks. I had fun making this one. I really wanted to make him cute and fluffy, and not just lineart drawn.

<8DDD Awwww~! This is so cute! It looks reaaaaally adorable, and I love the interesting sketchy-ness that it has to it. :3 Only think I can say about it is the right side (from our pov) is higher up than the left. You can see it especially with the sloping of the top of the head, but the right eyes, ear, and cheek fur is doing it too. Otherwise it's perfect and adorable~! :3

hmmm. Parallax. It's one of the downsides of drawing on a Cintiq if you're not prepared for it. I'm still getting used to it. Should be an easy fix.
I generally find that parallax is mostly fixable by using Edit->Transform->Distort, if you're a Photoshop user. (Might be useful if you ever have to scan something you drew on paper and find it's leaning weirdly.)

Thanks. Glad that worked out so easily.
I wanted to have fun and give him a more 3D look, which is what started this. Most of the drawings out there of him seem normal linework style, very much like Hussie drew him. I like reinterpreting other artists' style into my own.

Oh goodness yes. Reinterpretation is simply too much fun. Especially when you get like, a video game or something with really simple sprites because it's old, and changing that into something more complicated and awesome. :3 It's a lot of fun, and a lot of the fun in art. :3 And with Homestuck, interpreting like, "OK, Equius might have a typical hooked British nose" or "I think Karkat has thick eyebrows while Sollux looks Asian" and stuff like that. :3

Yeah, that's part of why I think HS fanart is so popular and fun to do. Reinterpretation means everyone can put their own spin on it, and nobody can be going against canon much.
Not to mention Hussie's setup of HS (especially with Nepeta's shipping wall), it allows for some pretty crazy ships, and it's completely normal. Same for all kinds of other crazy stuff (redrom/blackrom/moirail, etc)

Yeah. It's pretty much that feeling of "I can interpret this series into whatever I want, like whatever I want, and /no one is going to flame me/". I mean, I cannot tell you how many people I've heard say they hated a certain fandom because the fans went batshit, and like, started giant flame wars when a person said they liked this pairing, or shipped two characters in a gay way. People can just like whatever they want here, and there's honestly something for everyone.

Yeah. I may not care for Eridan or Gamzee, but I get that some people like them, and in HS fandom it seems pretty natural to say "Yeah okay it's your shipping wall" and be done with it.
PS. Appreciate your wanting to let me know about any issuse. This is what I wish DA had more of - people willing to crit, willing to just say something to help the other person. I admit it's pretty easy to drop back down to lurker, unless you've got something to talk about or to art about...

Yeeeeeah. Not big on either very much either, or Fef. But some people really are, and hey, if a person wants to go ship seemingly random people together, it /honestly/ is plausible in Homestuck, so I'm cool with it. :33
Maaan, anytime! :33 To me, besides having a place to put up my art and see my own progress, that's a lot of what dA is for. You're not going to find a constant source of criticism in real life, especially if you're the only artist amongst your friends and family. But dA is an endless potential of people to tell you how to improve if they'd only take the time to do it.

Mm. I used to have a lot of that trouble, too, when I wasn't actively thinking about not doing it. Nowadays I always grab a binder when I sit down to draw to angle it, though I do forget on occasion. XDD
Oh, really?? DD I'll definitely keep that in mind! It's a really good thing to know! :3

Photoshop has a lot of those useful things. The best stuff is when it's subtle rather than blatant.
You'd be surprised how well Linear Dodge at say 5-15% will work on sharp bright highlights. (Hair shine, eyes, metallic items...)
Let's see what else works.
Image>Adjustment>Levels can be useful if you feel like the contrast is either too low or too high, but it's best as a subtle fix.
Oh....have some fun with Image>Adjustments>Selective Color sometimes. You can get some very interesting effects when you play with whites, or blacks. Other colors too, whatever strikes your fancy. Lightening up the black a pinch and tinting it a color's a great way to throw a bit of mood into your lineart.
Ya know, it's various enhancing crap like that. I still feel that most of the work is still on the artist with color choices, linework, brushes, etc, but there's nothing wrong with using a little technology here and there to save time.
As for my parallax problem, one thing I find works is pulling the image over off the cintiq and onto the main monitor; I can usually see where the problems are and either redraw those lines, or do the Distort.
Someday I won't have that issue, but mh. For now I chalk it up to adjusting to the cintiq. I got it only almost 2 months ago. >_>

Mm. I still need to discover all these little tricks. You'd think for three years of doing digital art I'd have learned more little tricks, but I only just learned the whole locking transparent pixels. Then again, since Photoshop has so many things like that, maybe not. XDD
You'll get it. :3 With two months, of course you'll still be getting the hang of it. ^^ And in the meantime, you have someone who is more than happy enough to letcha know. :3

Heh. Bluh forgot about the locking transparent pixels. I don't mess much with transparency, only in layers, Everything gets flattened at the end...
Heh, thankyou.
I've been messing with PS off and on for probably close to 10 years now. (Started with it right around uni.) I will insist that there is no way in hell that I know everything about that program. I'm always picking up something new. Frankly if it was so inflexible that there was one way to do the right thing, it wouldn't be an industry standard program.

I work heavily in line art and putting every touching space on its own layer, so locking transparent pixels saves me literally hours in work. XDDD I get really unmotivated when I realize I have to erase things outside the lines when I've been shading for four or five hours. XD
Yeah. I love that there's always a new thing to learn. And it all goes really far for making the artists' life easier or just decreasing time frames on art a lot of the time. XD

Yeah, look I'm just gonna be a broken record here if I say anything else.
And I'll have to play with locking transparent pixels...is that a setting in Layers or Adjustments?
