Although it may not be original (I've seen a lot of meerkat pics) it's still a wonderful shot and people like animals.

- i see nothing wonderful there (altought i love meerkats.. so thats not the problem).. and just giving DD for "people like animals" is questionable..

Well I guess you aren't going to like every DD... and of course I don't like a lot of DDs, but at least I don't hurt the artist by my comments I would try to encourage them to improve. If you don't say why you don't like it or think it's average then how do they know what to work on?

-Right, but i'm far away from hurting someone with such comments.. there is nothing wrong with the shot so i cannot say what the artist should do to improve. Thats because of the usualness.. and also thats the 'problem'. So what's quesionable is like i said not the picture it is more the circumstance suggesting such picture for DD and win. (everybody prefers some DD's and dont like others.. but in my opinion and without insulting the artist -it is not 'special* enough to get the price.
(and this said by a not too much critical guy who is of course not on the quest finding every single mistake or something in every artwork).

Mate, don't worry about it... I was really shocked when this got a DD, I actually agree with you, there are many much more special shots out there.
That being said, I am really honored to get a DD, especially as I am still learning about photography and this shot was about practicing framing more than anything else! xD

Haha thanks for the sympathy. It's sometimes necessary to discuss and explain.. if u write just short and somehow provocative phrases. So.. sure i expected reactions like "you cannot say this here!! this area is to praise the artist -you crazy insulting meanie!" ..
But in my opinion (which is a honest one) this.. here<- is exactly the right and only place to say the opinion even when it's not a commendatory comment. (like the 314 million others who glossing over)

I totally agree with you on that. I personally always try to add a critique (but that is in my nature), but I remember when I started out doing photo-manipulations (my primary area of art) it was the blunt comments with no critique that forced me to do better; made me look at my own work harder and fix the issue.
So I thank you for the honesty!

Indeed, it was taken in a zoo. Though the actual meerkats (as a rescue zoo)are originally from the wild. They were illegally captured and imported so ended up there for some stupid legal reason opposed to going back to the wild. Though the lil' meerkats were bred there opposed to the wild.
I wasn't really sure what to put them under, so since they weren't really 'domesticated' I went with wild.

- Oh, okey. If i shoot in Zoos i try to find perspectives where it doesnt look like a obvious Zoo-Shot. (so your one as DD is still ambiguous to me 
Well, at the end of the day we have a girly half-wild animal shot faved by girls which got a half- DD.

I don't know... to be honest, you're comment ".. whats special about this shot ?" (to me)
Although I would question a lot of DD's I've seen... If people like a picture enough to recommend it for a DD then they must think it's pretty special.
