To be honest and to be fair it wasn't that she hated her patients. That wasn't the reason behind her cold and aloof treatment of them. Nor was she completely heartless, as her coworkers had insisted. They called her: "The Devil's nurse", "the Raging Red-head", and the "Heartless Harpy among many, many others. Some far too vile to give voice to.
No, the temper-mental redhead had a good reason for her standoffish behavior. A good reason for the distance she kept from her patients.
Death. Death was the reason.
He had been her first patient. She was right out of medical school and he was only six years old.
Though the chemo had robbed him of his wild and wiry blond hair it had not taken his infectiously, radiantly curious and affectionate heart.
The bond between them was forged that very first day. They were like two half of the same soul. She eased the pains of his treatments, and he always made her work day a lite one.
When he died a part of the nurse had died with him.
"Never again!" she had silently vowed to herself. "Never again will I allow myself to suffer like that! Never again!"
Her work day over she leaned by the hospitals revolutionary 3-D printer as she stared at the care photo of her long lost patient.
"Why?' she sobbed as she stared at the adorably innocent smiling face. "Why?"
She tried to rub the tears from her eyes with her free hand and that's when it happened...
the photo was knocked from her hand!
She watched as it dropped right down and sank into white fluid in the large tank of the 3-D printer.
She was terrified
Mortified.
She had no idea what would happen. How much damage that one photo would, or could do to the revolutionary device.
Right before her eyes the lights on machine flickered as the printer came to life. A hazy series of colorful lights shown within the fluid filled tank. Clear and red lights shown dully through the white fluid as a steady hum filled the air.
With a metallic click and a shrill BEEP! the 3-D printer stopped.
Then some stirred with the tank.
Slowly it rose out of the tank.
Inch by inch it rose.
The nurses' trembling hands flew over her mouth as the figure of a small child emerged from the tank. He was bald, his skin white like the fluid only marred by a streak of red that ran down the right side of his body. He looked to about six years of age and wore a slight smile on his cherub like face. Without a word this child, this miraculous child climbed out of the tank and stood before her.
She couldn't believe it! She just couldn't believe it, but he was the spitting image of her first patient. A perfect duplicate of her sweet, sweet child. He opened his snowy arms wide and, with one word changed the very course of her very life.
"Cheerie-up?"
Her heart leapt in her chest and tears running down her face she embraced the wondrous child. Cheerie-up had always been there shared word. A secret word they used when one or the other was feeling down.
"It's you!" she whispered as she rubbed her face to his. "It's really, really you!"
She didn't know how or why this miracle had happened and to be honest, to be fair she really didn't care. He was back. He was back and she was not going to waste the second chance that fate had given them both...

Just a story idea that came to me when I saw this masterful piece.

there is a certain irony in the fact the broken out piece has the form of the superman sign ... Asif there was a shield missing , enabling the wounding of the heart ...

I hope his childhood memory doesn't involve his family's ashes being permanently attached to his skin.
