Description
I fancied trying something completely and utterly different to my usual style.I tend to try my best to achieve as much realism as possible in a piece and that can be extremely tiring and a lot of hard work.
With this piece I thought... I really want to get a painted look, I want to try painting something bold with BRIGHT colours, I want to try painting a different kind of face and attempting to work in a new way.
This is what happened & I rather like it, it's certainly been great fun to do.
As with all my work, this has been drastically resized down, the original is 2496 x 3052. Which is rather large for here and would certainly not fit on the screen, unless you had some crazy mad giant monitor.
Anyways, enough prattle. Full view if you'd be so kind and thankyou for looking. I hope you have a wonderful day.

The face and the hair are visibly CGI, but the rest is just too good... How much time did you spend on this one?

I see... it's just like... there is a discrepancy in realism between her face and her clothes, if you catch my drift. Both are excellent, but they don't quite match in style... Or maybe it's just me.

Umm probably about three weeks on and off.
I tend to work on loads of different things at once so if I get bored with one piece I can skip over to another.
I wanted to try a different style with this one, so it's a little more Manga and less of a realistic portrait kind of thing.

That's some wonderful hair... purple striped with reddish-purple... well, I dunno the names, but ya know what I mean. I can understand it being more fun this way than with plain black ^.^
Hmm... I am not feeling particularly inspired to write a poem in memory of this image, so I'll be brief and blunt
Things I love about the image:
- The eyelash coloring, it looks like rubber! Woop!
- The hair coloring. Ya know it shines like a wig, which makes her feel like a real character more than those anime characters with impossibly colored hair (I don't know how I KNOW the way it shines is like that of a wig, I just know that's what came to my mind and I was reminded of when I looked at it... o.O)
- The metal look of the buckles. That's as realist as it gets ^.^
- The jacket... the folds and play of light on it are very convincing, looks as realistic as one could wish it did.
Things that bug me a bit about the image:
- Her left eye. When I looked at the thumbnail something inmediately bugged me about it. Looking at it in full view is better, but there's still a little something that bugs me about it and I can't quite place down what it is. Well, in a sense, it looks like the left eye is closer to the nose than the right one, could be that.. or could be the eye's rotational angle.. whatever it is, it must be very very slight, for it isn't noticeable enough for me to even pinpoint out with exactitud what it is, or perhaps her haircut is just fooling me around.
- The lower belt from her arm has a blue shading. I know on the very bottom of the image there's shades of blue too, but... I don't know, the whole jacket seems to be the kind of deep dark blue you see around.. and from black to the bright white, there's not a pixel where it goes through clear blue, unlike what one sees on that second belt of the arm, to me... normal blue has no place in this image. Well if you like that blue then I really can't object (but honestly, the belts seem to be black everywhere else)
- The inner line of her arm... it just goes up..and then bends in.. goes into an U-shape and becomes the outer line of her torso? I dunno, but what kinda explanation is there for that line to bend like that? I know there are three pieces of "matter" there, the arm, the lower end of the sleeve, and the jacket around the abs, I don't know how they should be meeting with each other, but a smooth curved U outline was the least expected outcome...
- The outer line of her arm.... ya know, looking at that line, and going up... across the lower belt.. doesn't it looks like the leather on the arm has no width? I mean... am I making sense? I hope I do because explaining this is kinda hard. Well, in short, it should be like this.. between the skin and the sleeve there should be some distance, like ----___, (the skin is on the right, the jacket on the left, the skin goes below), but if I remove the belt or think it isn't there, it looks more like the surface is ____, that is, the jacket had no width. Meh... there was no need for me to try so hard at explaining this >.<
- Just a general observation.. the outline of your character against the background is very smooth. And when I say smooth, I mean there are no sharp corners (as the ones one would expect on my complaint about the inner arm line), perhaps there's a very good explanation for this and it automatically voids my last two complaints, though.
Ah well... I don't know if any of my arguments hold any water, but I was just trying to be honest and critical here I say things as I see things, and if I am wrong, that's because in reality many things do look really strange.... o.O Altough in the end this image is infinitely good regardless of what I've said against it X3 About the background.. um... I am neutral there, backgrounds are not always needed as they can often take unnecessary work and effort.. specially on an image where the strong focus is the character, not the background, and as such, I can just let ya get away with whatever background you decide to use

HOLY GUACAMOLE BATMAN!
Essay!!! Essay!!! Thankyou!!!
You should write a guide on commenting, you really should.
I've never met anyone who leaves such indepth, insightful and useful comments.
Or such long ones
I dunno what to say about this one really, I didn't start off with anything in mind and I just messed about with a few different ideas whilst it was in progress.
You're right about the hair shining like a wig.
Most synthetic material wigs have strands that are exactly the same dimensions, may vary in length but width and circumference tend to be the same. They'll also be made out of plastic which reflects light differently as the surface is smooth all the way down.
Real hair differs in width individually and is made up of miniscule overlapping scales, so is coarser that synthetic hair.
As the shine on this hair is smooth and in a relatively straight line across the head it does kinda mimic the way a wig would shine.
Regarding the blue strap and the arm... I think that extra blue blueness and the u-shaped arm bend happened when I was mucking about with filters in Photoshop.
A) I kinda liked the stylized unnatural curves and
B) I'm lazy and couldn't be arsed to fix it so that's why it happened and also why it stayed.
Her eyes... Dunno, I sometimes have trouble placing highlights so that's why one eye might look a little off.
And the background was supposed to be a pop-arty, stylized version of the Japanese flag, because she's Japanese.
And it was also something different to do VS my usual plain black

"Hmm... I am not feeling particularly inspired to write a poem in memory of this image, so I'll be brief and blunt "
And when I look back at the final comment... I can't believe I said that in the beginning
Nah I don't have a tutorial or something like that for commenting, altough I did write down a journal entry where I explained several of the experiences I've had through commenting and what I've learned about things that should be done versus things that shouldn't be done (ironically enough, I called it "No Comment..." )... altough in the end it really depends on the artist you are giving comments to, if you really don't know that artist, it's easy to end up writing comments of their unliking O.O (well, in my case, my comments go alright when the artist in question doesn't minds me spotting what I consider "flaws" on images and can overlook over the fact that I sometimes tend to talk too sure of myself... that bugs a lot of people O.O)
About the image... indeed I suspected that it must had been some kind of filter that smudged out the edges, but I was waiting for ya to tell me so so then I could just smack myself on the forehead and say "I should have known it wasn't your fault, you are too good to make those kinds of mistakes!". And now....
*slaps forehead* I should have known it wasn't your fault, you are too good to make those kinds of mistakes! My apologies
(yeah I also noticed your backgrounds usually fade into black that's why I didn't say anything against it )

LOL!!! You're funny, but not like a clown because I'm claurophobic and I freakin' hate clowns because they're EVIL and they scare the shit out of me.
So you're funny like umm, when cats don't realise french doors have glass in them and they run full pelt into the glass and their face gets all squashed up and they give you a "look" then walk away and pretend it never happened.
That's extremely funny.
Well I think it is.
But then I'm weird.
Argh!
I should have just said.... You're funny!
But I couldn't leave at that, could I? No.... I had to go dig myself a hole and put an owl in it then fall in.
Bugger.

Um... that hapenned to me one day O.O
The doors that lead to the balcony on my house are made of glass, and one day I genuinely thought I could walk through glass (either that or I didn't know the door was closed) and ouch my nose. Lucky me there wasn't anyone else around to mock me for it for the rest of my life
Oh and clowns are not just evil, they are dark, sinester, diabolic, they wear all those freaky smiles and pointy star eyes and crud! I am definitely not talking about those psychos >.<

Very nice indeed! She really does have the whole cyber-punk feel to her.
The whole design of this person is great and you got a whole lot of detail in this too, which work very well.
The only thing i'm not so sure about is the big red circle in the background. Compared to the rest, it just looks flat and dull. Maybe if you made that look painted too, it would look more interesting and less distracting? Just my opinion of course!
Otherwise, great work hun.

Thank you!
The big red circle was kinda, supposed to be a pop-arty, stylized version of the Japanese flag because she's Japanese and I thought it would look cool.
And the Kanji (I think that's right, if not, the Japanese character in the corner) should be a K, hopefully.
How are you doing at the moment?
I've been keeping up with you via your Journal and thinking lots about you, been wracking my brains to think of anything helpful or useful to say.
To an extent I can understand what you're going through, I've been through some similar things and I certainly know what it's like to feel empty, directionless and like you're playing a role in life meant for someone else and you just can't get it right.
I hate it when you know you should be feeling something but it's just not there and it's not like you could ever force yourself to feel something.
The only thing I can say is never to feel bad or guilty because you're not feeling something.
For me, and for many other people, especially sensitive/insightful people it's a self defence mechanism that just prevents you going to pieces and keeps you running.
You've got no control over it, its just the way some people are.
Bloody life, it's a complete and utter fuck sometimes and I really don't understand why it's always the lovely people that have to suffer and put up with such awful things.
Tell you what, if I'm completely wrong in my Atheism and there is a God and if miracles happen and I ever end up in heaven or anywhere near him..... I'm going to punch his face in.

wow, I love how you did the shirt!! it's like, perfect O_O the coloring is great and amazing. I thought the hair looked great I didn't like it before I full-viewed, but after full-viewing it was great ^_^ I can't explain it. my only real other thing is it looks a little awkward by her arm. it seems to end so abruptly and then all of a sudden there's the background. it's hard for me to explain :/ but her arm doesn't seem quite right against the white. but I don't want to end this on a bad note
I think this piece is overall amazing.

Heeeeeeey! I used to have purple hair. Admittedly it was temporary dye and then it rained and then I had a mainly purple shirt, but I still had it!
Now I have red/black hair.
What colour do you think her hair should be?
(I really liked the purple *sobs*)

Well, her hair should be... hmm... magenta!
Seriously, I think that the traditional and old fashioned "black" would fit great here, but you are the artist, and you like purple (as temporary dye, but you like it), and looks great! *hides*

BLACK!!! How many people have black hair!!! Like, umm, 110% of the world's population! Yeah! And any wannabe goth.
I did consider black and I did do half a layer of black hair to see what it looked like but it just seemed kinda boring and uninteresting.
And I wanted to see if I could do purple shiny hair.
I can see you hiding you know.

I showed your painting to a friend, and she told me "I like the purple hair color... what I don't like is the purple hair color with a redbackground", then a realized that that was what "annoyed" me (in the good sense of the word... if it has one).
In my opinion, her hair would look great in dark red, or gray. Did you try those colors? I just am curious, and as always couldn't resist the urge to give my opinion. But I don't want to annoy you (in the good sense of the word... Oh well, I know, it doesn't have a "good sense").
