Description
The origin of centaurs..? Not really. An unknown creature, possibly demonic in nature or design, specifically seeks out humans and partially devours them, merging with their body to create a symbiotic bond. What the creature gets out of it is uncertain but the human have their lives extended considerable, maybe even indefinitely.
Wiser scholars suspect that the creature cannot survive for long on our plane of existence without filtering means of sustenance through a native life-form. Others fear it's a way to extend its own life to buy time in order to fulfill its true purpose, that of a seeker...but of what?
False centaurs are rare but their numbers are thought to be slowly growing since ancient times, and these "Fauxtaurians" are always on the move making their exact population uncertain. Because of their unnatural dual nature they are never quite accepted anywhere, forcing them to stay on the move, covering more ground in constant search for the right place to settle down.
Here are some links to similar concepts!
Beheaded Bull - Battle Gorger (2010)
IMPORTANT NOTICE!
I've been informed by commenters that there are very distinct similarities to this creature and one featured in a hentai manga called Man Eater (a fantasy themed self-publication)
This is a fun coincidence, but hardly surprising to me. Manga and anime got so many cool concepts and designs (even the really dirty ones) so of course they already beat me to it! X3
If you are OK with hentai you can go look for it yourself if you're curious...for purely academical reasons, of course.
WARNING: very adult only! Full name of the title is: [Rakujin] Man Eater (COMIC Unreal 2013-04) - credits to jkrolak!

I really like this! I remember the older one with the skeleton horse, definitely one of my favorites as well.
Have you thought about doing other creatures that are half-human, like Naga or Mermaids?Β

I remember seeing your horrifying skelecentaur hybrid a long time ago, and I'm glad (?) that you've brought the fantasy-parasite-symbiote concept back. Reminds me of some concept art where demons were amalgamations of single-celled demons which needed to parasitise wizards in order to sustain themselves in the material world. I truly hate these concepts on a visceral level, and I mean that in the best way because I love the art and the concept - and I love hating them xD
What's the story behind the pic? Looks a bit awkward. One day a demon hunter, the next day a demon. It rapidly turns from horrifying to hilarious if you imagine the lower half and the upper half retaining independent minds, so they have to work hard together to get anything done.

I can't make up my mind either on this subject. I think it's fun to draw the occasional horror monster including details how it operates, but I don't enjoy watching horror movies at all. :3
Having different minds and opinions of direction could be fun but a bit counter-productive from the demon's point of view in the long run. I can imagine this being a silly situation for a time after the meld, having a turbeulent bonding period until the human accepts their fate, realizing they now have to work together to survive.
I'm toying with the idea that the demon is sent to search for something. Because of the nature of the meld between human and demon those altered human centaurs will not be accepted anywhere, even if they make friends or become heroes, so they are eventually uprooted and forced to wander again and again. As they wander they cover distance and areas, allowing the search to continue. The human centaur is allowed to to live as they see fit, but their curse is that they will never fit in. Abrupt or subtle changes will force them to move on. However, the time in-between these stops can vary greatly, which means that the demon is in no hurry. Its perspective of time is quite different than that of a fleeting human's life, something the human centaur will notice as their own extended lives carry them past many generations of their former kin.

jkroklak kindly pointed out the distinct similarities to me in a previous comment. Quite the coincidence I assure you, but hardly surprising. Manga and anime got so many cool concepts and designs!
If I find specific inspiration somewhere I make it a habit to state the source and/or artist of that inspiration as a way of saying thank you, especially if the concept and design ends up as similar as this creature. :3
Hm, since the subject keeps popping up I might as well add info about this in the description. Cheers!

I like to think of the idea that there's a whole tribe out there hidden away in either a mountain area, Nestled in a Valley or Mesa and the tribe a is able to breed naturally but their favorite past time is to capture Wanderers and stick him or her into a symbiote. Can't go telling others if you will be attacked by others who don't like these fake centaurs. More so I wonder if they can give birth to more centaurs, or if they only produce more symbiotes.

DerangedMeowMeow In reply to MercenaryX [2018-09-17 17:37:53 +0000 UTC]
That's a nice idea! I jokingly turned down the idea of them breeding in any way based on a hentai manga with pretty much the same creature, but I'll leave that option open for debate and more versions. Β
For my version, I'm thinking more of sterile and biologically incompatible demon, and that they only pop into existence from dimensional rift. Oral merging and organic melding is a way of survival in this case.
They're simply not designed for reproduction, being more like drones or scouts as part of a collective hive. That's the reason I added a vastly increased lifespan to the them as an extra perk.
