Description
The origin of centaurs..? Not really. An unknown creature, possibly demonic in nature or design, specifically seeks out humans and partially devours them, merging with their body to create a symbiotic bond. What the creature gets out of it is uncertain but the human have their lives extended considerable, maybe even indefinitely.
Wiser scholars suspect that the creature cannot survive for long on our plane of existence without filtering means of sustenance through a native life-form. Others fear it's a way to extend its own life to buy time in order to fulfill its true purpose, that of a seeker...but of what?
False centaurs are rare but their numbers are thought to be slowly growing since ancient times, and these "Fauxtaurians" are always on the move making their exact population uncertain. Because of their unnatural dual nature they are never quite accepted anywhere, forcing them to stay on the move, covering more ground in constant search for the right place to settle down.
Here are some links to similar concepts!
Beheaded Bull - Battle Gorger (2010)
IMPORTANT NOTICE!
I've been informed by commenters that there are very distinct similarities to this creature and one featured in a hentai manga called Man Eater (a fantasy themed self-publication)
This is a fun coincidence, but hardly surprising to me. Manga and anime got so many cool concepts and designs (even the really dirty ones) so of course they already beat me to it! X3
If you are OK with hentai you can go look for it yourself if you're curious...for purely academical reasons, of course.
WARNING: very adult only! Full name of the title is: [Rakujin] Man Eater (COMIC Unreal 2013-04) - credits to jkrolak!

Of course you did, and no sarcasm intended. Β
"Artist Rules #1846-45N: If you think you've come up with something unique, there's a 95% chance it's already been done by a team of Japanese manga and/or anime creators...and that they're already working on book and/or season 3." Β
I have honestly not seen this exact concept as far as I can remember. Despite my occasional creepy explorations I avoid horror, especially of the Japanese variety...unless my curiosity wants to remind me about the true meaning of regret.
Do you remember the name of the manga?

As a matter of fact, I have it saved in my centaur data base. I'll have to switch computers to find it, but I'll send you over a copy. Or I could just check Google - google knows everything.... all praise the google. My google-fu is strong.
It's called:Β [Rakujin] Man Eater (COMIC Unreal 2013-04) [English translation link: ** oooh, I don't think DA is ready for that, I'll send it over via note ***
I wouldn't be surprised if there is at least a little mind control, influence from the body. Otherwise, one would expect the victim to be looking for a high cliff, active volcano, powerful cleric / shrine / church, not abandoning any useful equipment from their prior lives, as well as (resisting) finding more victims to share with.

Umm..... Β I don't think so. DA admin is touchy enough when it comes to the NSFW stuff. And I would rather not draw their direct attention by waving a red cape in their face. Or get known for sending NSFW Hentai links upon open requests. Subtle is definitely not part of their job description based on their actions.
For those who really do want to find it. I think I left obvious enough hints how it can be done.

Oh my... That's HENTAI manga! Yeah, that's too much even for DA and myself, but I sort of asked for it so...thanks, I guess..? Damn, my artistic curiosity! Β Β
I'll warn you all, that comic is very NSFW, but I can confirm there's a strong similarity in both the creature design and concept...aside from the hentai bits.
Yeah, I could agree that there's some of link and control to avoid a mental breakdown, but then again, maybe the creature seeks out suitable humans according to their mental compatibility rather than the physical.
Perhaps a little bit of both. The creature needs to bond in order to survive so there's a time limit. If it gets lucky the bond let's the human remain the same but if the creature gets desperate the bonded a any random human can get a bit wonky. In my mind the bond is (or eventually will be) permanent, and a separation would kill both of them. But then again, there's always magic so who knows.

I envisioned it as the 4-legged part being ageless until destroyed, itΒ must eventually get a replacement when the human portion eventually wears out, is slain, or an accident happens.Β
And while I'm sure they're qualified, they even have appropriate white coats and light reflectors, I am not sure that those two fairies would make reputable therapists.

Wow, that is such a cool idea! I like the concept that the former human is still themselves and in control (at least apparently), that really does lend mystery to the whole thing...would make for an good NPC who the players are never quite sure they can trust...

Cheers! Although commenters has seen something just like it originating from good ol' Japan...to no-ones surprise.
And I agree that this joined creature could be quite easily used as a random passing NPC encounter of some sort.

Hmm, I wonder... could this be a precursor to the necrotaurian picture you did a while back? It would certainly fit the theme!
π: 0 β©: 1
DerangedMeowMeow In reply to Cabletwitch [2018-09-16 20:37:04 +0000 UTC]
Well, perhaps not a precursor per se, but the concept is indeed based on a similar alternative centaur theme.
A previous commenter drew the connection to an old concept image with this theme: Carcass Centaur (2010)

Yes there are similar even aside the obvious centaur appearance. The Carcass Centaur is an undead demonic parasite spirit that enslaves its victim while this new one is more of a symbiotic demonic life-form.
