Description
Just trying out different methods to fix leather to steel.Sewing leather on leather in most cases is tougher than riveting. Especially when you're using these so called two cap, quick or tubular rivets.
Solid copper or aluminium rivets is the best option. In the first test I sew the leather to the steel strap with properly deburred drill holes, still the steel ripped right through the waxed threat. With the copper rivets even a two hundred pounds gorilla (and his wife) couldn't rip it off, just bent the 3mm steel. I used proper steel washers that don't bent nearly as easily as copper rivets and they just slightly bent outside but are still far from slipping through the holes.

I would suggest using wider washers though. It might be fine for the initial test, but over time, the leather will deform, and wider washers will allow it to hold out for much longer.

Wider washers deform more easily. I think I'll use a strip of sheet metal instead. Riveted in 2 or 3 points should make it extremely sturdy with few concerns about deformation.

I was quite surprised that two 3mm copper rivets could hold the weight of a grown adult.
