Description
Dim white light filled the tiny, windowless room. They sat across from each other, staring into each other’s eyes, not saying a word. The silence pounded in his ears like the beating of his heart, which had become rapid. The single bulb hanging from the ceiling fizzled loudly in the quiet room. The light went out. The sudden darkness left only fading outlines of the objects in the room with them. She could just barely make out the two chairs, the table between them, and his face. He reached across the table for her hand. Sensing the gesture, she moved her hand to where he couldn’t see it as the darkness settled in deeper. He stood up and fumbled along the wall for the light switch, but when he found it and flipped it on and off, nothing happened. The darkness crept in closer. The silence had been uncomfortable, but the darkness was unbearable to him. He opened his mouth to speak and thus solve one of their problems, but no sooner had he said her name than she hushed him, not wanting to hear whatever lame excuse he had this time.
