Description
In Persia, the eunuchs were intermediaries between ordinary people and the king. They were counselors, secretaries, favorites and beloved of king. Beauty of eunuchs was very important for Persians. Darius I by combining all 24 countries to Persia, said that each year, each country paid tribute to three thousand talents of silver and 500 boys-eunuchs. In Persia, eunuchs enjoyed the respect, and often reaches the highest ranks. Such as the vizier to Artoxerxes III, named Bagoas, which was almost the first person in Persia. In Assyria eunuchs were mainly soldiers, generals, officers, bodyguards. All historical documents referred the Assyrian eunuchs as fierce warriors. All high administrative posts were held by eunuchs, it was in order to avoid generic grabs and dynastic wars. In Assyria known eunuch, Army General Sin-shumu-lishir, who became the king of Assyria.
In Rome, the eunuchs called Galli. A Gallus (pl. Galli) was a eunuch priest of the Phrygian goddess Cybele (All-mother) and her consort sun god Attis, whose worship was incorporated into the state religious practices of ancient Rome.
Galli were strange people and violating the foundations of Roman society. They dressed as women, use bright makeup, long hair and at the same time praised the severe austerity and renunciation of family and extravagant sex.
In China, eunuchs served in a harem, to protect and entertain the Emperor's concubines, have a cunning and crafty character.
Interesting fact that all eunuchs except Chinese were mostly preferred men.

The Assyrian is my favorite because he/she/it or whatever gender it is is neutral and cool and badass and looks like it can fight, be independent, and do damage.

Cool thanks for replying. The native Americans had and have two spirits like eunuchs but Iβm sure the ancient Mayans, etc had that stuff too.

The Chinese one is really cute! I'm Chinese myself and I know how crafty the eunuchs can be. Most people I know really hate them. But I don't know any female eunuchs though.

I was going to ask you about Assyrian eunuchs, but you gave me some helpful info. A story idea that actually ties into Persia also ties into Assyria (one of my characters actually kills the Assyrian King by using magic to stop his heart), but there were several gaps that I just couldn't figure out.
Namely how my character and her friend (a captured Egyptian prince) can escape from Esarhaddon's palace in order to make the long trek that gradually leads them to Egypt.

I find this really interesting but I just have one question what you mean when you say "all eunuchs except Chinese were mostly preferred men". That means that is possible to a eunuch be a woman?

Chinese often tended to women. While the rest preferred men. Well eunuchs are still men, biologically.

First of all eunuchs were not sex toys of men. Eunuchs were made for a different reasons. Yes, they could be lovers for men, but that was not the main reason. Secondly they did not chase women because in general eunuchs are gay, even if they are pansexual they still prefer men -- just by nature. All myths about them with women are fables. As far as I've read the REAL historical sourcesΒ I didn't find any evidence of eunuchs being used by women.

And they had to dress and look like women? That's kind of mean, but the art and the information are awesome!

Imagine they did it both ways. Women who can't get children get dressed up in men's attire and have to be soldiers or something. o.o No really by that logic, it should have happened. People back then were weird...

There were in fact women priestess in Rome and they being manly tthey acted like men, dressed like men and even took the active role in the rites. Scythian and Turkic women could be warriors before they get married. Siberian and mongol shaman women could live like men and even marry a woman.

What about in Persia? A friend told me that women often served in the military and could even become generals and admirals. But was there certain requirements that were needed?Β

Persia didn't have a unified set of rules about who could and couldn't be in the army, or what rank they could have: each culture had it's own set of rules. Scythia was in the Persian empire, and women there often fought before they got married. In the Greek city-states of Asia Minor (present-day Turkey), if a king died with no legitimate son or brother then an unmarried daughter took over. Part of the duty of a king in a Greek city-state of course was to lead the armed forces. The famous example of this is Queen Artemisia I of Halikarnassos; who was an admiral in King Xerxes army. This was a privilege of royal women exclusively however, ordinary women couldn't fight in Greek city-states. There were also mercenary companies which included women or were led by women, from a variety of cultures.Β

So they just switched roles. That's interesting logic, but it somehow makes sense.

Many people have a stereotype that eunuchs are whiny fat creatures that are hiding in the harems while in fact they could be strong rulers, bodyguards and priests that had the status of medium between gods and king :3
