You're absolutely right Gridlinked, thanks for the feedback!

I'm currently working on the second pass for this one. I'll be adding some nice ambient light between the rocks, smoothing out the lava so there's a level of detail contrast, and then finally some much needed shadows, details, and highlights. I only post things as WIP with the hope that are more experienced eye (yourself for example) will catch something before I've gone too far ahead of myself. Thanks again!

It's missing highlights to really pop out. Most cartoony textures, and indeed the ones in WoW and Torchlight, pretty much adhere to the low-mid-high tones. In this image, you have some shadow/contour, and it's mostly mid tones. You need to bring a bigger definition in terms of shapes (shadow/contours), and you need to add an entire layer of highlighting - bring out the shapes and details in the rocks, make them stand out.

I'm guessing, of course, that you know this, since this is still a WIP.
