Description

Ported to OBJ from the waterline model created by Alberto Garcia for Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2 (CFS2).  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  No model download.

This was one of the first class of naval auxiliaries built after the end of the Cold War for the Spanish Navy (Armada Española, or ESP in my personal abbreviation scheme).  It was a joint venture between Spain's Navitana and NEVESBU of the Netherlands to come up with a suitable design for a modern large fast replenishment oiler (AOR) for naval fleet operations.  This effort resulted in the Dutch HNLMS Amsterdam and the Spanish Patiño class.  Both are almost identical and one can also draw favorable comparisons with the British Fort Victoria class from the same time period (mid-1990s).  Patiño entered Spanish naval service in 1995 and was eventually joined in 2010 by Cantabria, a slightly larger sister ship.  They carry self-defense weaponry only and also have helicopter facilities, with support for operating up to five helicopters as required.  Both Patiño and Cantabria are expected to remain in service for the foreseeable future.  To find out more about the post Cold War Patiño class AORs of the Spanish Navy, follow the links below:

This is a straight port with no changes by me.

While I am not releasing my OBJ port of this for public download at the request of Mr. Garcia (the original creator), you can download it yourself from one of several different Microsoft Flight Simulator series fan add-on sites and port it for your own personal use ONLY with ModelConverterX.

NOTE - This is being filed in my 21st Century gallery despite its service entry date (1995) because it came after the end of the Cold War (1991) and it will spend the bulk of its service time in the early part of the 21st century, not the 20th.

ASIDE - This could probably be tweaked and retextured as a good approximation of HNLMS Amsterdam.  It could also be modified appropriately to represent the Royal Navy's Fort Victoria class, since a free model of that has yet to turn up (fall 2020).  The main visual differences betwen them is that Fort Victoria has two medium sized funnels/stacks mounted in parallel instead of Patiño's single large one and its stern helideck is both longer and shaped differently.  For those of you who don't want to go that route you might at least want to whip up a proper Royal Navy texture for this so you can use Patiño to stand in for Fort Victoria in your 21st century fantasy fleets.  I'd ask Mr. Garcia first, though, before you go messing around with his model for anything other than personal use.
