Description
Ported to OBJ from the model created by Klaus Novak for Microsoft's Flight Simulator X (FSX). Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. No model download.
Maya (MAI-ah) represents the third iteration of AEGIS-equipped guided missile destroyers (DDG) built for the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). There are two in the class, Maya and Haguro (HA-gu-roh'), both named for famed Japanese World War II era cruisers, which entered JMSDF service in 2020 and 2021 respectively. They are a somewhat improved version of Atago, which themselves were tweaked versions of Kongo, the JMSDF's original AEGIS-equipped destroyer class. Like them Maya is also considered by many naval experts as part of the overall Arleigh Burke family of guided missile destroyers, so named for the United States Navy (USN) destroyer class whose design is their basis. Maya was built as a direct replacement for the last of the Hatakaze class, which were the last of the JMSDF's "one-armed bandit" guided missile destroyers still in service (a reference to their single-arm Mk 13 missile launchers). Maya shares both the AEGIS phased-array radar system and forward-mounted vertical launch system (VLS) for its missiles, and also retains the added helicopter hangar first introduced with Atago. The main change with Maya is that it was built on a larger hull that either Atago or Kongo in order to house its new COGLAG propulsion system, first introduced on the Asahi class for JMSDF main warship classes, in order to improve low speed cruising performance and thus extend operating range. The heavier power plant will also be needed for the first generation naval railguns (?!?!?!!!) that the JMSDF hopes to retrofit them with for their main gun armament once the technology is further developed. This is a straight port with no changes by me.
While I am not making my OBJ port of Mr. Novak's model available for download, you can get it from many popular Flight Simulator series add-on sites online and port it for your own personal use with the appropriate software. Please give him proper credit as the original creator if you do. Thank you.
