Description
Ported to OBJ from the SketchUp model created by Salvo, which he subsequently ported for use with Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2 (CFS2). Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
The two ships of the San Giorgio class were the first carrier-type vessels of any kind built by the modern day Italian Navy (Marina Militare) since the end of World War II. They are not true aircraft carriers but gator carriers, which is a slang term devised by the United States Navy (USN) to describe former carriers and carrier-type vessels designated or designed for supporting amphibious assault operations. Technically they were classified as landing platform docks (LPD) due to the docking well in their stern, which can accommodate up to three large landing craft, but they have since been modified and reclassifed as true helicopter carriers (LPH). As part of their designed purpose their air wings normally consist exclusively of helicopters, although this has been expanded to include small "jump jets" and other VTOL/VSTOL aircraft from the last decades of the 20th century onward. They have on board storage and accommodation space for handling a full battalion of troops along with all of their equipment and vehicles. The first of the San Giorgios entered service with the Italian Navy in 1988 and three were eventually built (San Giorgio, San Gusto, San Marco). There is also the Kalaat Beni Abbes, a "gator carrier" serving with the Algerian Navy since 2014 that was built to an improved San Giorgio design, and Qatar has recently signed a deal to have one built for its own navy as well. In that light they can be seen as affordable alternatives to smaller nations who can't afford to either build or purchase true aircraft carriers for their own navies. They have been relatively successful in their designed purpose over the years, although the age of the original San Giorgios is finally catching up with them. Current plans of the Italian Navy are to decommission them rather than give them their next major refits for extended service lives, in order to make way for a newer class of Italian gator carriers currently under development. This is a straight port with no changes by me. It's a waterline only model because that's the way Salvo built it, since CFS2 normally treats ships as scenery and therefore you don't need the lower part of the hull for that program. If you want a lower hull then you will have to build or add it yourself.
This is not my model. All I did was port it to OBJ for you. Please credit Salvo if you use this in any of your own 3D projects. You do not have to credit me for my OBJ port.
For non-profit, non-commercial use only.
ASIDE - This is one of the best types of warships of its kind to have if you're building your own custom late 20th or early 21st century virtual fleet for whatever 3D project or purpose you might have in mind.
