Description Ok, so over the ages, i noticed that if there is one thing that space artists (especially newcomers) struggle with, then it has to be planet textures. Lots of them just cant get their planets to look good, cant find good textures, or simply dont have 3d studio max

So i decided to throw everyone a bone, and i made a tutorial on how to make a somewhat realistic-looking planet using only photoshop. Be adviced that you need to have some basic photoshop knowledge to follow this, and if not, i suggest you spend 50 dollars on the adobe photoshop book, or read the help files that photoshop came with)

I made a JPEG tutorial because:

1) I'ts annoying when you have to change from photoshop to your browser, and vice-versa. With Jpegs you have everything neat in photoshop

2) I didnt feel like writing HTML

If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to drop me a line.

In addition, here's a tutorial on making rings. I see many rings and tutorials produced with the spiral tool and that's just terrible! Thanks for the effort... but that's just wrong.

Hmm, do you know if the shadowing part is possible on Photoshop elements 6.0?
I got all the way up to making the colored circle with the two black, but I cannot find the window that says "layer style" to change the rest.

Yea, apparently Elements won't let you do stuff like that.

No sense beating around the bush

I made the tutorial when photoshop 7 was around, so it'll naturally work with anything after that one.

So I'll just get that one or later, then.

Does not work at all - I'm no photoshop newb here either... I follow step 1 EXACTLY, and it just applies the layer styles to the whole layer. How do you apply the layer styles to the selection only???!!! Please someone help me

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

luke-seti In reply to luke-seti [2010-02-01 05:19:31 +0000 UTC]

In response, it was of course my own stupidity. I as duplicating the whole layer instead of just the circle. Best. Space. Tut. Ever!

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

dinyctis In reply to luke-seti [2010-01-31 23:40:42 +0000 UTC]

There's no way to apply the effect to only a part of a layer. The layer needs to be of t he specific shape (circle in this case).

Let me know if you have any more issues!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

luke-seti In reply to dinyctis [2010-02-01 05:06:27 +0000 UTC]

Yes... I now get that now . My own stupidity believed I duplicate the whole layer including the black background, instead of just the circle. I did get my unique planet finished in the end. In hindsight, your tutorial has to be one of the best I've ever seen. Seriously, thank you so much. .

hey great tutorial! love it loads, but as i was going through it and i got to the bit where you have to add color settings to the "atmosphere" layer and i come to editing the color settings and nothing happens? i've set the layer to screen and added the inner and outer glows? doesn't seem to work ?
any advice?

thanks

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to gandalf121 [2010-01-31 01:34:56 +0000 UTC]

So no effects whatsoever take effect? Try starting a new document and applying random effects to any shape you want (as long as it's smaller than the canvas).

Also.....the layer isn't empty, is it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gandalf121 In reply to dinyctis [2010-01-31 14:14:53 +0000 UTC]

nah no effects at all, its the layer with the blue? cant remember the name of the layer,
But ill try what you've said.

thank you for the hand mate

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to gandalf121 [2010-01-31 17:32:27 +0000 UTC]

Hmm no, the atmosphere effects should be black and should be between the ground (texture) and the shadow.

You could remove the textures and still end up with a nice background touch, should you not have a use for a detailed planet

Nice Tut Just trying right now...but got the problem that "cutting" the shadow isnt really working. the shadow layer is active (all others aswell), but I dont need to have it selected, right ? Then I select the "base" layer (why you write CTRL+click btw?) but if I then copy&aste it won't give out what you have there.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to counterSTRACK [2009-12-06 01:56:57 +0000 UTC]

ctrl+clicking the base layer will select the shape of the layer (dotted lines around the actual shape). This is helpful for deleting the excess shadow around the planet (after you inverse the selection, of course).
