Description Ok, so over the ages, i noticed that if there is one thing that space artists (especially newcomers) struggle with, then it has to be planet textures. Lots of them just cant get their planets to look good, cant find good textures, or simply dont have 3d studio max

So i decided to throw everyone a bone, and i made a tutorial on how to make a somewhat realistic-looking planet using only photoshop. Be adviced that you need to have some basic photoshop knowledge to follow this, and if not, i suggest you spend 50 dollars on the adobe photoshop book, or read the help files that photoshop came with)

I made a JPEG tutorial because:

1) I'ts annoying when you have to change from photoshop to your browser, and vice-versa. With Jpegs you have everything neat in photoshop

2) I didnt feel like writing HTML

If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to drop me a line.

In addition, here's a tutorial on making rings. I see many rings and tutorials produced with the spiral tool and that's just terrible! Thanks for the effort... but that's just wrong.

when you said duplicate the layers twice and make them black what did you mean, cause after i do the next couple of steps i end up with the glow around the border of the black square -/

I meant duplicate the shape layer (the circle), not the background.

If that's not helpful, try to upload what you have to scraps and show me. I might be able to help you out better if I see where you're at

Its not letting me use the 'Clone Tool', it comes up saying I need to define a source point.

Can you give me any help?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to Skulkin [2009-11-24 14:52:05 +0000 UTC]

To define the source point means that you need to tell the program what you want to clone. To do this, hold down the ALT key and then click on a section that you want to clone. Then, release the ALT key and start cloning away

If you could help once more;

When I try to fill the circle it simply won't work.
Anything you can suggest?

dinyctis In reply to Skulkin [2009-11-24 17:34:05 +0000 UTC]

How are you trying to fill it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skulkin In reply to dinyctis [2009-11-24 17:42:35 +0000 UTC]

Well (iMac Photoshop CS3)

Image > Fill > changing the option to ' Foreground colour' and then I get stuck, i can't select my texture (all of it) and then it simply wont let me fill the circle.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to Skulkin [2009-11-24 19:34:49 +0000 UTC]

Click where it says "foreground" on the top left and choose "pattern." It should be a dropdown menu.

Also, make sure you have the paint bucket too selected and not the gradient tool (which is the alternate to the bucket). To fill it, just click!

Hey can you make the planet tutorial for 3D Studio Max? I tried 3D in Photoshop CS4 but it has less options (compared to 3dsmax), still it's effective. But I really wanna make cool looking 3D balls

Rocking tut man. Quick question: I don't understand the whole copy/paste section on how to remove the shadow...can you clarify?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to lolicantdraw [2009-10-17 19:29:12 +0000 UTC]

The key to removing the shadow is to have the base layer selected (dotted line going around the shape) and then invert it so that you can erase/delete whatever is outside of that shape.

angelsgrace16 In reply to ??? [2009-10-16 01:46:08 +0000 UTC]

ok I figured it out, i had to have the little dancing ants around the base layer when i selected both base and shadow and copy and pasted it. GOT IT!! I just applied my texture and this is so bad ass and is going to look awesome on my project.

The one thing i couldn't get to work for me was removing the excess shadow that was unneeded. I did exactly what the tutorial said but for some reason it wasn't working for me.

MrZilla In reply to ??? [2009-10-10 23:25:04 +0000 UTC]

I do not understand how to remove excess shadow?, What is the difference between a selected and active? layer

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to MrZilla [2009-10-13 02:17:48 +0000 UTC]

What I mean by "active" is that it's got to be the layer that you're currently working on (highlighted in the layers palette),
