Description
Here's a drawing that I did of Basil from "The Great Mouse Detective." For anyone who hasn't seen this movie (and if you haven't I highly recomend it) the story behind the dialog is that throughout the movie, Basil refuses to say Olivia's last name correctly. Every time he says it wrong, she corrects him (a little more annoyed each time) and every time she corrects him, he replies with a simple "Whatever."Character and original background (c) Walt Disney Studios, 1986.
Character (c) Eve Titus, 1958 - 1982.
Art (c) me.

I heard it was Barrie Ingham's idea to pronounce her name wrong. On the final attempt, he was supposed to say it correctly, but Barrie threw in another flub unexpectedly. They kept it in.

Cool! I never knew that. In a way, I think it's kind of a good thing that they left that last one incause where the other times I think it was like Basil's way of saying, "Little girl, I really don't care what your name is. I just want to solve this case and apprehend my nemesis." By t flub in, with the way he says it it says, "Yea, I know your name. I just want to good naturedly give you a hard time." It kinda helps to show how he's grown attatched to her. All in all, I'd say this is the BEST movie ever!!! ^_^

Why I think the flub was deliberate every time: he says the surname correctly when addressing her father toward the end. John Musker has said they didn't know which direction to go with Basil, whether to make him overly silly (like Monty Pythonish) or straight-laced (like Holmes). Barrie came in and knew how the character should act, thus what you see is a lot of his input.

Lol, yea totally! The fact that he could never get her name right was something I could always sympathy with since everyone messes up my name. And it always cracked me up that, here he never ONCE says her surname right when talking to her, but when he's talking to her father he says it correctly. But anywho, glad you like it!
