I got to love this one. The situation, the colors, the moment you've chosen to imprint this on your cameras digital memory makes me smile, and makes me feel good. I cannot know if this girls lower back bone has hit "rock-bottom" just a split-second after you released the shutter (a painful experience, I imagine), but if she did, tell her it all was well worth it.

Thanks, Bruno. Sliding the entire hand-rail was quite perilous, but she was wise enough to slow down before the end, which as a side effect let me have a better timing.

So no broken lower back bones then, which is a relief. You've been in the right place at the right time, and the girl was gracious enough to give you a chance to capture her in "full flight". Rather extraordinary. Good on both of you.

This place is in an area of the city where I take a lot of my photos, and this particular staircase has always a lot of kids around. Not to mention that the street at the bottom of it is full of photo and art galleries. So, I have plenty of reasons to go back there.

Wow, I didn't know such perfect places do exist. I would't mind one around here. So if France is looking for further export opportunities, here is one.

We have a very active gallery - [link] - that organizes a photo festival ([link] ). I haven't yet figured out if it is every year or every two years, as most of the festival that we have in Lyon, because since I came back to Lyon almost 4 years ago, it was canceled once, so it is difficult to find a pattern. This gallery is in this street, and a lot of other galleries have decided to settle there, in the neighborhood of this one.
This used to be a poor neighborhood - I could probably find some photos taken 10 years ago that would show a not so glamour place - but it has improved a lot and is becoming a cultural district.

I especially like the colour ... in spite of a limited palette, it holds together nicely, probably due to the symmetrical structural elements?

The position of that manhole cover adds an element of "what if ".

lightrae In reply to djailledie [2010-10-08 08:28:01 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh, but you know that people are inclined to leap before they look.

It's interesting that open manholes are becoming a serious traffic hazard in some urban areas. It seems that many covers are being stolen.
The covers have a modest value as scrap metal, however, many of the older covers were custom made for the particular municipal agencies. Because they carry custom markings and names they are sought by collectors.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

djailledie In reply to lightrae [2010-10-09 03:35:15 +0000 UTC]

We had a period of time - a couple of years back - where metal was stollen everywhere here. I even heard that power lines were even torn town to steal the wires. So even if that's no copper, there is some weight to the manhole covers, that could justify stealing them.
But I can also for sure understand the collectors part. I grew up close to an area where the "industrial revolution" took place: huge - to that time standards - family owned companied involved in all kind of industral production, such as the Peugeot and Japy families. This companies have changed activities or disappeared, but the area has many museums, showing what was once made there. All of them proudly show manhole covers, with their markings.

Greed and stupidity run hand-in-hand everywhere.
Power Utility substations have large copper conductors and equally large electrical charges but they are still targets for thieves.
About 3 years ago, 20km from my home, two brothers attempted to saw through a live high tension wire. One of them died right there.
The other brother was caught, charged and eventually convicted.
While awaiting trial though, the surviving brother was caught stealing again.
He was trying to get copper wire, with a saw, inside another substation just a few km from where his brother died.
Sometimes you just have to shake your head in disbelief.
