Description
"It was a paw, fully two feet and a half across, and equipped with formidable talons. After it came another paw, and after that a great black-furred arm to which both of the paws were attached by short forearms. Then two pink eyes shone, and the head of the awakened gug sentry, large as a barrel, wabbled into view. The eyes jutted two inches from each side, shaded by bony protuberances overgrown with coarse hairs. But the head was chiefly terrible because of the mouth. That mouth had great yellow fangs and ran from the top to the bottom of the head, opening vertically instead of horizontally."—H. P. Lovecraft, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath
Something Ive been working on today. Trying to draw one of the strangest denizens of the Underworld in Lovecraft's Dreamlands.
The bizarre head wasnt the problem. I can manage bizarre. It was the crazy bifocated arms and their double forearm sections. Easy to visualise but a swine to actually draw.
I think i solved the anatomy problem by doubling up on the upper arm muscle structures so that each forearm could have independant movement.
The perspective is giving me a few problems, as per usual, but its more or less ok now. Will hopefully get this beastie done over the next day or so.
UPDATE : Well, very belatedly i decided to have another look at this sketch. Here, at least, is a start at the shading and colouring process, mainly on and around the head...

possibly, its mentioned as being on the forelimbs certainly.
my only concern was that he would end up looking too apelike.
but its still a work in progress, i can always experiment with the idea.
thanks

Well wherever your experiments take you, I want to see pictures.
Lots of pictures.
Even if it's a half assed doodle on a McDonald's napkin!

One thing I've noticed about any Gug representation is that no one actually draws them with "paws"

they seemed to be necessary or else both forearms would just move together as one

hey well done
i messed about with spore for a while some time ago.
it was a pretty nifty creature creator but the latter stages of the game became frustrating very quickly for me and i packed it in.

Same for me too, Still good fun to create things in though. Alot of Lovecraftian monsters can be recreated extremely well in it.

I know what you mean! the number of times that I've created something while painting in photoshop and then saying to myself "wait.. How did I just do that?? " and never knowing how to reproduce the same effect again..

I'm sure the finalised result is going to be a display of epic proportions.
