It's the Time Devourer (also called the Dream Devourer in an earlier form) from the games Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. Basically, after a disaster in the girl's home nation, she's sucked into a portal and binds with a big, bad Cthulhu-esque ailen on the other side, goes insane, and they end up trying to destroy everything. She gets better!
Chrono Compendium has a good overview of things , but there's a lot of wild conjecture they tend to take too seriously.
