I feel the need to be bold a venture a guess; Joey stumbled upon some super death dealing something-or-another which 'reflected' it's properties on dead tissue, allowing him to be somewhat alive (I reserve the 'somewhat because he's still green), but his still being full of holes from his last (or current) stuggles renders his new 'life' a bummer, aka bleeding.
