Description J:

Lookout! Another huge file

It's due time that we made reference pics for the massive cast of The Second Life of Stephan Beaumont (SL's proper, non-abbreviated title ). Not everyone had been drawn out yet, and it was a good way of branching out and drawing older, younger, and less fit people. XDDD

And soooo much research went into designing their outfits to ensure that they actually looked like they were the style in 1725! OK, time for a history lesson! People could only afford a couple of outfits at a time-- it was a loooot pricier than it was today, as more labour went into making clothes. To get an idea of people's wages and the cost of living back then take a look at [link] As a result, some people wore the same outfit day in and day out. Also, everyone wore their tunics or chemises as night clothes.

Women's mantuas were a lot higher-cut and had a "cape" in the back, many of them had ruffles on the skirt (ruffles = you had money!) and stomachers were not common until the late 1730's. As for men, their coats had "skirts" and kind of poofed out in the back. Even tricorne hats had a specific look back then, but I didn't draw any hahaha.

Even the placement of the mouches (beauty marks) on their faces had significance-- they denoted people's marital status, temperament, and the way they displayed physical affection. A heart on the right cheek meant the wearer was married, one on the left cheek means engagement, a round patch on the forehead suggested majesty, one near the corner of the eye suggested passion. Although patches were primarily worn by women, men also wore them.

The upper class tended to wear light colours, silver, beige, ivory, and a spectrum of reds and pinks. Black was also a symbol of aristocracy. Textiles from India were extremely popular in France at the time, as was gold embroidery. The middle class gravitated towards bolder colours (such as red or blue) because they denoted status (albeit light colours were the choice of the upper class).

Hair was worn very close to the head-- those enormous Marie Antoinette wigs were not seen until the later half of the century. Women wore mob caps to keep their hair from falling into their face while doing housework. Men wore bag wigs if they could afford them, and hair was tied back with a black piece of cloth. Facial hair was a no-no amongst men who were not in the working class.

OK, history lesson is over! This is our massive cast! Everyone is drawn in the same pose because I am lazy I was trying to focus more on body types and clothing.

Oh and no one ACTUALLY goes shirtless during the story hahaha! XDDD The reason why I drew some of the men without their shirts and Sel in her petticoat and corset is for a body-type comparison. The only person who is dressed provocatively is Clarice, but it's for her job as a barmaid at a local hell (yes, that is what they called inns that offered gambling XDD). The colouring is kind of sloppy in some places but this is just supposed to be a quickly-drawn reference for everyone in our cast.

Hope you like it! If you want to know more about any specific character, just ask <3

So is this suppose to be a fanfiction or play of some sort? And if it is where can I read the story?

Aamaaaazing. O___O;
You just keep surprising me with how much time and effort you put into your art.
I love love love how this looks like video game design, haha. And it's such a nice reference! Wish I could do this, but too lazy, so all I can do is admire you.
Great job, all of the details in the clothes are magnificent. Always love the references to historical clothing.
As for the different body types and face markings, etc. Wow, incredible detail. Anyone can tell how much you love your characters, and that's such a nice thing. <3
Also, I think the thing that I like best is the fact that they look so different all powdered and dressed sharp. xDD
Nice jobb. I still envy your patience, as always!

Thank youuuuu! <333

You should make a fashion template for all of your characters, I'd love to see the kinds of outfits they wear! I have a good idea of their general styles from your pictures of them, like Storm's Motley outfits.

Thank you again! Clothing in the 18th century isn't that simple to reproduce, especially the fabric patterns and lace involved, so I had to cheat and use textures

LOL! XDDDD They really do, faces back then were powdered and rouged to the point where they were barely recognizable, and when the white wigs were donned, it was basically a guessing game as to who everyone was XD

Thank you again!

I would do that if I wasn't too lazy, hahaha. XD
Love it!

This is a wonderful introduction to the cast. I love the facial details and the various degrees of the costumes from the britches outward! Beautiful details on all the clothing. You really did do your homework.
Oh,no one goes shirtless. Well now...

This is a fun way to learn about the differences in classes, since that figures well into the storyline.
Oh...I also like the blood stains on the doctor's apron. Give me the chills.

Thank you!

LOL, it is a shame that no one goes shirtless, as back then one could get oneself arrested for indecent exposure! However things might be different on a ship headed to Brazil; it gets pretty darn hot around the equator and might necessitate some shirtless shenanigans

Thanks again! Even back then, physicians were not exactly hygienic or rolling in money, so his smock would be pretty stained despite the occasional cleaning It gives him some major Sweeney Todd vibes, I must admit XD

Thank you so much! I have so much respect for people who take the time to research their period pieces-- the stories take much longer to write, but they're very believable and fleshed-out. It's a labour of love!

BTW your gallery is absolutely beautiful, you're definitely one of those people who invest a ton of research and effort into characters and their worlds
