That it's plagued by laziness, mostly, just like it's always been.
For decades we've had cardboard-cutouts that were passed off as characters by authors who'd rather not make the effort to give them even a modicum of depth or layers and were content with writing them as a set of traits/qualities. Now things are exactly the same but we're also expected to glorify the work of said lazy creators because they claim that they're trying to be "topical" with their lazy creations.
