Full page tutorial for a very lovely friend . I feel terribly guilty for not being around lately and for not being around to teach her the ropes of this wonderful program. I am going to use bullet points T3T<3 Make it easier if I have to refer back in the tutorial.

  •  The set up. Click the sideways arrow and hide the beginners assistant. If you want this program to work it's best you'll have to use it the way it's meant to be used. The beginners assistant is fine when you are beginning but when you want to get more serious then this is the tutorial you need. Image below shows where said arrow is.

  • With this closed now go to window as marked in red.

  • Below are the windows you will need opened. So in the window tab enable, Tool Options, Navigator, Colour and Layers.

  • I already have my story prepared but I will walk through it anyway. Go to File>> New Story and a dialogue box like below will appear. When it is open adjust your page bleed to what you need. I have mine set to double page spread since I find it easier to create a better flow and I love to make double page full spreads. The most important part however is if you are doing small panels you'll definitely want 1200dpi. This is a high resolution giving you a really wide range of dot sizes for your screentones. If you're doing a basic 4koma page however, 600dpi should be plenty. If you need to view this image larger simply click it for a bigger view.

  • In the layers window LEFT click Ruler and two options will appear. Ruler layer or Panel Layer. Choose Panel layer. We want this so we can cut up our own custom panels and have each panel perfectly spaced and neat and also so we can draw within the box and not have to erase going over the edges.

  •  Right click after you have cut up your panels and select Rasterize and when it asks to keep the original you must select yes otherwise your art won't be contained within the panels. At all times make sure your panel layer which you have rasterized is at the top as well to make sure this handy feature works. I'm making this my title page so I don't need to cut it up but below shows the tool used to create panels on the Panel Ruler Layer. I held and dragged to make the extra tools appear. The create panel and object selected help you to manipulate the panels that you create.

  • Now for the sketching. Try to keep sketching on the premade sketch layer which is the layer called Layer, the defualt one for all new pages. With tool options open it is up to you but I turn off pen correction while I sketch and turn it on when I need it. To do this simply untick Correction. Also note that dragging on the circle or tiny dot in the small square window within the tool options is one way of changing the brush size. The other way is to use numbers but sometimes it's quicker to just drag and adjust within the window. Below is an image of my currect settings. For this sketch.

  • With the sketch prepared click new layer and select Vector Layer. Make the vector black and white, give the layer a name if you like, I just called mine ink. Then use the pen tool, the one that looks like a calligraphy pen. Enable or make sure it is enabled, correction. I am setting mine to six. Do some test strokes and adjust to a setting that suits you. This will keep the lines crisp. In the image below I have two crossing over streaks, I am about to show you the most helpful features of vector layer.

  • Using the tool marked in the red circle you can use the little hand to pull and move and adjust your lines. While it is enabled and the tool options window is open you can choose other ways for this tool to behave. This is especially useful if you stroke is perfect yet out of line with your line art, you can simply move that one stroke over to where you like without disturbing the structure of your stroke.

  • The other useful feature is the eraser settings. You can set it to only erase the left over edges at a point so it becomes a perfect point or one entire stroke line without erasing the ones beneath it. The circle below shows these options. The first icon is normal erase. The second is to erase lines that have intersected and gone past each other. So the black line art I made I could simply click the stroke sticking out the side and the entire stroke on the outside would be erased leaving me with a "Y" shape and preserving the rest of the line art as is. I wouldn't have to erase it as close as possible like on regular raster layers. This can be extremely helpful when drawing buildings or hair or other line art requiring nice neat, clean and sharp edges. The last icon in the red circle deletes entire lines. If you have merely one stroke you wish to erase but to do so would mean redrawing it then vector layers have the advantage. If you draw all your line work on vector and this happens, simply select the last icon as displayed in the red circle, click the messy line and that line and only that line will disappear while the rest of the line art blow and above it will remain the same.

  • The other vector tool that is very helpful is the line width adjustment tool. I marked it with a red circle below. In the tool options window you can choose to change the line with to thicker or thinner. When selected you do so by moving the tool over your strokes and it will look like a selection tool as it highlights the path you mark out and afterwards when you finish your stroke you will see the changes. Use the tool options window to adjust the strength of the tool as you use it. This is excellent for when you get those random lines that just don't match up like the others.

  • The other tool which is easy to adjust with the tool shown in step 9, is the Curved line tool. It works on both layers but on vector layer it can be moved around, adjusted thickened or thinned. Again you can get other effects by using the tool options window. I set mine to stroke in and out 5mm which gave me the smooth thinning out ends. If I unticked these then I would have solid ends.

  • Downside to vector layers, bucket fill doesn't work on vector layers, it only works on raster layers. Solution? Easy. Right click the vector layer when you are satisfied or finished with your line art. Select rasterize. When promoted to keep or discard the original layer select yes just incase you need to adjust or change it later. On the raster layer you can now use bucket fill for your black areas or colour them manually. Below shows the right click rasterize option.

  • I have now finished my inking. It is ready for screentoning. There's multiple ways to screentone and I am going to show you 4 ways. The first one is using it like a pen tool. First go to window and enable the materials window as show below.

  • Once it is opened you should see this window appear as shown below. Navigate the folders in this order. Tones>> Default >> Basic tone>> 1 screen>> 1 dot and find a suitable basic dot screentone. Before going any further please read the next step carefully.

  • Double click the bar where it says materials to hide/shorten the window and move it out of the way. Below I have marked in red the mini preview of tones. Click this and your pen will go from black into to screentones. Everything you draw will now be in this dot format. To go back simply click the black. BEFORE YOU TONE go to the next step and read carefully otherwise your tones may not work to the best qaulity possible.

  • With the area clicked from what was circled in red in step sixteen, click anywhere on the page and a new screentone layer will automatically be created. You can use this as a way to paint on screentones. When you complete you tones however, you MUST right click and rasterize otherwise when you export it will turn out as a flat grey colour instead of a screentone!
  • Method 2: Before you screentone in this method create a new layer in this specific way in order for it to work. Click new layer, choose raster then change to 1200dpi. Next choose 8bit grey and then conver to tone. This is very important. This also will make sure all your colouring in grey scale is converted immediately to screentone. The image below shows all of these settings that I mentioned. Hit ok when it is done. On this layer you can colour in greys and it will be screentone but the defualt dot size will be quite small. To adjust this go to window>> Properties. Go to the next step to see how to alter the tones.

  • Click the tone tab in properties and adjust the settings here. You can see the effects take place immediately. I recommend doing a test blob like I have done below before toning your areas. This method gives you the most control.

  • Method 3: You can use the selection tool. First go to to view and enable Show Selection Launcher as shown below.

  • Select the areas you wish to tone using the various selection tools or the selection layer if you know how to use them. Hold down the shift key to add selection areas or hold CTRL to minus areas. Next, click the last icon of the selection launcher as marked in red below.

  • This dialogue box will now appear. This will give you multiple screentone options, from basic dots to material screentones to common textures. Preview them and choose the one most suited to your comic/manga. This is also the better method to use for screentoning clothing and concrete since it has the better controls over the lighting value. This is all I have to show you using this method.

  • Method 4: Colour what you want toned in the rough lighting value that you need OR make a somewhat greyscale painting on a regular raster layer. Go to Filter>> 2DLT and a lot of options appear. This works better for 3D objects and greyscale photographs. It will line art and colour whatever you have there and break it down however you specify it to. It looks more complicated than it is. The multiple greys is basically like a cell shade version of gradient. Hit preview to preview and ok if you like it. Below is a screencap of the 2DTL dialogue menu.  Personally I like method 2 and 3 to work with.

  • All of this should help you to complete a manga page but I have one more helpful screentone tip to share. I'm going to show you how to manipulate screentones so that they look more realistic. In otherwords I am going to show you how to warp material screentones to move in the same direction as clothing and what not. Open up the materials panel once more. Navigate this way: Go to Default >> Basic Tone>> Design>> Pattern and select the first pattern or whatever you like really. Select your area where you want the tone to be manipulated over then drag and drop the tone material into this area use. Open the properties window if you have closed and adjust your screentone scale and dot size to what you need, Rasterize, then go to Edit >> Transform >> Mesh Edit as shown below. If it isn't rasterized then it won't work.

  • A red grid will appear like what I have shown in my screen capture below. Manipulate your screentone using those points. Just remember to use or open Tool Options to adjust your mesh settings. The more segments means more lines and points you can use to manipulate the shape and appearance of your tone.

  • Below I have moved my mesh points to show an example of what I am talking about. I increased my segments to six by six before I started. Below is how the mesh looks after I moved the points then the second image is how it looks after I hit ok. This is especially good if you want your tones to follow the flow of a curtain or dress.

  • Start neatening up your screetone layers by placing them in folders and naming them. This will help you from getting lost and confused. Then when you feel your page is complete and ready to export go and make sure all your tone layers have been rasterized. The tone layer will appear with dots like marked in the red box below. If you see it and it's not hidden then you haven't rasterized and kept the original. By default when rasterizing the tone layers and saying yes to keeping the original it is auto-hidden for you. Mine is hidden because it has been rasterized. The raster version is above it as you can see with the mini previews.

  • To export to post on DA go to file>> Export Image (In pixels) This dialogue box will appear. For BEST results possible MAKE SURE the parts marked in red are set. Those are entire page, colour and PNG. Downsize your picture in something like photoshop or sai or GIMP to maintain quality but if you export in this way then it will look just as crisp as it does in manga studio and all the tones will appear correctly in their dot form and there shouldn't be any flat grey colouring unless you did that on purpose. If you didn't and there is a patch that is grey colouring instead of dot screentone then you have not rasterized a tone layer somewhere. Which mean you will have to go back through your layers and locate it.

  • Of course don't forget to save in manga studio file format as well so you don't loose all your work
  • ENJOY YOU'RE AMAZING CREATION!
  • And that is all I have to teach. This is just one of many many many ways that you can create a manga or comic in Manga Studio. Hopefully I have shown and explained enough methods to get some basic screentoning and inking completed. If you have questions please don't hesitate to ask. Below are some links to my other Manga Studio Tutorials.

I don't mean to sound rude with my reply but I'm in a bit of a rush. This is just the basic steps.

File>> Export>> A new window appears. Change these settings like in this blog so your screentones don't screw up or show up grey miwasketch.blog.fc2.com/blog-e…

Export as PNG, never JPEG. Export at full original size. Then take it to photoshop or GIMP (gimp is free) and resize. Set the resize image sampling to Nearest Neighbour or bubic smooth. If those cause artifacts (specs that make your image look dirty), undo and try another resampling. Resize the top page width to about 900 pixels wide, the standard for webcomics and good net viewing. Only save this as a JPEG if you need to but it's best for viewing if saved as a PNG and turns out much clearer.

Now that it's at a reasonable size in file size and screen size you can upload your PNG version anywhere.

If all of this is too confusing let me know and I can make a picture step by step.

Under the menu >> Window there is a an option called Tools. If it's not ticked, then it's not enabled. Enable it and you should see it appear somewhere. If it is enabled then it might be hiding underneath something. Then underneath the gradient tool is what looks like the line tool. Click and hold to pop up other options. You will find the curve tool under the line tool in the pop up window. If you need a quick video, please let me know.

Do you have any tutorials on how to make "straighter" or "smoother" lines? Every time I draw my lines they come out extremely pix-elated and weird looking and I wish for the pixels not to be there

    DraconianRain In reply to Shelia13 [2014-11-09 23:24:55 +0000 UTC]

You can't stop the pixelation from happening in program while you work but you can make it better or disappear on the exported image. Just make sure your comic pages are at least 600dpi resolution or better. Do you have photoshop or freeware GIMP? If you have either you can use a smoothing blur to soften the line work to make it look more smooth and normal. I will try and make a tutorial for it this week. My best advice at this point is, if you are making line art only without any black fills, do and keep all of your lineart on a vector layer since vector layers can't/won't go pixelated and it generally exported a much nicer line result.

The project's going well so far. I just went today and got a quote from Staples to see how much the initial price would cost, my parents have suggested calling staples to see if we can possibly get a discount or have them help further. My mom says maybe they'll want to help make it on a bigger scale than 15 or 16 books since its for children of the hospital. I think it might be wishing too high, but i'm glad with the results I have so far. They said as soon as i'm done, get the stuff into them, the processing and making of the coloring books should take a couple hours or less than defiantly 24 hours.

I see. I've only ever used selfpublishing for things like that through lulu.com or kablam. They're usually a lot more responsive for good causes as well. I hope everything gets sorted and goes well for you. Sorry for the late reply. I've been pretty busy.

Well very, very close to the project being due. Its due next month. I went for a childish drawing style over a professional one maybe that the children would like something like that more. I plan to go out either tomorrow or Friday to get all of the books made and than hopefully i'll be able to drop them off at the hospital without wait. My mom says I should wait until afterwards, do the project present, and than claim about how I'm going to drop all of the books off later. Which honestly? I feel like that would make me feel like a liar or at least having the project incomplete. I want the project done and out of the way as quickly as possible. I don't want to have to worry about anything, especially with the computer fair coming up. There's only one worry I have in the class now. [I've made up with a friend who took a misunderstanding last year, and the kid who used to bully me in junior high dropped out of school...which honestly I felt like a bad person but that made my entire day when I found out I wouldn't have to see a smug look on his face every time I passed him in the hallway]....and the final problem within the class where I have to present....the guy I've liked for about three years is in there. I've tried going out with other guys but I just don't really get anywhere because I wind up feeling guilty about it and on the days i'm like "i'll forget today" he's suddenly really nice and i'm head over heels all over again...its terrible. I'm just terrified that i'll catch his eye and start stuttering. But that's the only problem once they're printed i'll be completely ready. I think I'm just going to stare at someone far, far, far, away from him.

Anyway, Happy New Years! Time to charge into this year with new hopes and dreams! Hope you got everything you needed done! How are you?

I'm not sure. I would personally go with my instincts. Also I'm sorry to hear things have been so stressful for you. I hope it will get better. I use to hate presentations. I always stared at a poster on the back wall.

Happy New Years to you too!! I hope yours was great and that you will have a fantastic year <3 I did not get what I wanted done but it's all fine. I'm doing ok, just really under a lot of personal stress lately. How are you lately? I do hope you will be able to get your projects finished how you want them done.

Well I have the books made from Staples, they're messed up because my dad wouldn't let me talk to tell them the last two pages are supposed to be side by side instead of page after page, they both make up one picture all the way a crossed, the binding is blue not black like I asked for, and basically I'm extremely unhappy with it but can't get anything done to replace it, I'll just have to learn to be content with it.

Well the presentation part I'm good at as long as I'm prepared, memorized it, and understand what I'm doing. I keep note cards to grind my nails into so as to distract myself from everyone else. My notecards usually have which slide I'm on because I have the tendency to just click as quickly as I can to get it over with.

Well I hope that you're stress is better by now and that you're having a fun time with life, because even the simplest things have a way to make themselves fun. I used to pretend putting socks away made bars of chocolate and one day I would receive all of this food. How have you been?

Oh I see. I'm sorry it's caused you so much hassle. In all honesty that was one of the reasons why I use Lulu.com or KaBlam. The custom service is great if they screwed up. One time they messed up and I got my revisions free which was nice of them plus the quality was great. If you do something charitable again like this I really recommend Lulu.com because you upload it yourself and choose all the options and it's more likely that it will turn out exactly how you want.

Ooh I see. I had bad stage fright for presentations. I always tried to get out of it XD haha. Glad I don't have to do anything like that any more. Well good luck and I hope it goes well.

I am way less stressed out now thank you and I am back to having fun with my work. I'm back to animating and learning my current tools. It's been awesome. Difficult, but awesome. Also lol that is the cleverest thing I've heard. I use to have the TV on when I put things away so I could watch something interesting and not think about what I was doing. Also I've been good, how have you been? And sorry for my late reply. It's been suuuuuper hot lately (currently summer over here)

Actually I think I might be able to use Lulu in the future, I've been really wanting to get something of my own published as a book but haven't decided which story file I want published first. I was looking at Lulu and it looked really, really good.

I only have stage fright if I'm not absolutely confident in what i'm doing or have to deal with a partner because I have no idea what my partner's going to say before they run off to sit down. Well I've got the books and the project has to be finished by the 12th so the due date is closing in on us but hopefully i'll be done soon since I got my dad to go get a card and talk to the person at the hospital so going good so far...except that I have to get it done on a weekday before 5 when I'm not usually home till 5 or 6 so i'll probably have to skip track one day.

That sounds awesome! I've gotten photoshop as a class and its actually helping me learn to use what most of the tools in Manga Studio are used for because of all the tools that match it. I actually have this giant plan for our "open/personal projects" where i'm going to grab a kimono, my face, and a giant house that's on fire [or a winter river with pebbles...not sure yet] and put myself in it. I hope its not too much for a first project.  You never know what children will think up. Lucky...I'm in the middle of a snow kingdom, we're digging ourselves out every other night. I prefer the warmth over going outside and knowing you'll have to shovel for the next several hours because of the snow. And its totally okay, I mean computers can't stand heat, that's why I went and bought a computer fan desk thing from Walmart for my laptop is because of how often its on and how much use it needs because of school

I personally think they are excellent. I've been using them since 2009 and hardly had a problem and the problems I had were fixed quickly. I plan to try createspace with amazon this year but I have heard from many that on the legal side, Lulu beats everyone. What I like most is that they give your book an ISBN and you can choose without cost to sell on amazon or pay for world wide marketing to stores. Before that I'd tried nearly everything and I wish I had of just used Lulu to begin with lol.

I see. I never got over my stage fright lol. I have low confidence for a crowd. Good luck either way!

Yup, you'll find if you learn one big program all the rest are a matter of getting use to where everything is. Also wow. I've never had to shovel snow and had to go to Canberra Perisher Blue (Perisher Blue it's like a ski resort type thing) and even then it wasn't cold enough and they had a snow machine. I'm lucky that way though, it only rains in my winter where I live. But, it floods. Yeah fan doesn't even work in our heat. I think in your temp if you use fahrenheit, I had a week of 120 (48 Celcius) and none of my PC's can handle it. My laptop sort can in AC but it was so humid about 80% that my AC struggled and I just didn't bother lol. Right now we've had a nice unseasonably cool week of rain and I'm loving it. But I still have February to get through which is the last month of summer and the worst! I hate it when it's gets to 49 celcius! I wish I could live in perpetual spring lol. I don't like the heat or the cold XD. I'm an autumn/spring type person. I keep forgetting it's snowy for you guys. Mean while I'm dying in the heat jks XD But I'm grateful for the the recent rain.

I finally donated the books!!! So happy! The laddies within the hospital where all so bubbly and excited to see me, it made me really happy! I'm still thinking about using Lulu for whenever I [actually] finish one of my own personal books to get them actually published I can't wait for the day that I can feel what I've worked towards within my own two hands with an actual physical format.

Well its not something you get over I guess, just something you get through. Like i'm not too good with roller coasters but i'll get through them, sometimes want to try them some more, but even after trying them a whole bunch if I leave the park and have to come back after a period of time I'll be afraid all over again. I mean if presentations were part of daily life I think they'd be much easier.

My photoshop project is looking great, I'm thinking about snatching it out of one of the accounts that she had us make and posting it here [if there's a category for school-learning-projects-and such...well aren't we all glad i'm not the one in charge of that on here...imagine all of the labels]. Yeah I work at a snow resort and even though it snows we occasionally still use the snow machines I think its something to do with the texture of the snow...probably not...I don't skii/snowboard much so I wouldn't be able to tell you. I should probably take advantage of the free lessons when they have them...maybe on friday. I mean that will probably help me think with the writings, the main problem most writers forget about is that even though they're writing inside their own little worlds is they still have to remember to live so they have many experiences.

120? Well where we live only hits to around about 90-100 that sounds terrible honestly. I hope you have a lot of air conditioning over there. Oh wait, ha just read AC...hmmm...well at least the rain is a blessing to have in such terrible temperatures. Yeah at least having it hot is something you can escape from like hide under a tree or something, the cold seeps in through your houses and windows and you just simply can't escape the monster.

Sorry for the late reply. It's been super hot or storming, plus some other stuff.

I'm glad it went well!! That's awesome <3 I wish you the best of luck getting your own work published and please do let me know if you do, I'd be interested. I love independent works!

That's true. I'm just glad that I never have to do them again XD. Well here's hoping I never have to.

Oh awesome! I think DA would recommend using the scrapbook or the manipulation section. I think for Canberra it was more a matter of it got to warm and it started to melt and they were topping it up to keep it in a usable state. I know of lot of it kept melting and it was warmer than usual but of course by the time I left that's when it snowed and got awesome. Yeah I think that's true for both art and writing. Sometimes a little experience in some things can really go a long way creatively.

It is terrible! I'm so over summer lol. I want winter as soon as possible haha. I am fortunate to have air con in my room but the rest of the house has none and it's been hard to keep the house clean. It's to hot and it's that kind of heat where it stays hot in the night bleh. Unfortunately there's no escaping the heat when it's that high. The shade is just as bad and the wind is just as hot. It's bushfire season here at the moment so I'm a little on edge as well. But the rains are very welcome despite the humidity. I was walking in it a few days ago, it was lovely.

Its alright, I've been running around with everything that our teachers are trying to drown us with because they're all like "when you've received the final result of pass or fail for graduation you aren't going to care a bit about your grades anymore, it'll all be prom and other things at that point"

Yep. I'm actually considering going back and rewritting that rewritten portion of the story that I've been writing since 7th grade. I think I'm going to write it to make more sense and become more mature. I think with time I've become a better writer, I can still see the talent in it but i'm like "yep, that doesn't work now" and "we know this character better now and they totally wouldn't do that" [author mode i'm usually more than one person if that makes sense]

Well at least you guys get to see what snow looks like over there. When we aren't all freezing to death and its left completely untouched it sparkles like fine jewels. Its such a beautiful creature but yet so frail. If you touch it even for the slightest moment the bitterness of the moment as are few moments in life will deform the pure white creature of snow.

So are your winters like a spring over there? Or is it crazy snow over there? Do you guys get a spring over there? Ac, ahh that's terrible my family usually sets up fans around the house to blow the air in different directions [including during the winter, which is terrible because I'm pretty sure that just makes it worse] Ahh that's terrrible hopefully there will always be water nearby. I'm glad I don't have to worry about too much of that. I went to school in -6 F two days ago, which wasn't pretty. I forgot to ask are your temperatures in Celsius or Fahrenheit?

I love watching the rain its so beautiful, I can't understand why people don't like it around here other than it makes their clothes stick. I even love watching it inside and the sound it strums on my roof, although it doesn't come around often and its terribly dangerous during the winter because it causes the roads to all freeze over and black ice themselves [i'll just leave a definition for black ice at the bottom because i'm not sure if that happens over there or if its a common term]

black ice-basically its ice that's so see through you don't see it there but its even worse than normal ice

Sorry I took forever with replying to this. My inbox is a shocking mess lately.

Oh I see. Good luck with it all

Oh no I get it. I have a lot of things to rewrite now that I am older and know more about a bit of everything and skills have grown. At the moment I'm just writing two fanfictions for practise as I delve into other genre's I'm not use to writing. It's fun.

That sounds beautiful. I've only seen snow once but like I said, you have to go down further south for snow. I'm above sydney so it's hot and tropical for me. And I prefer it. Being at the snow once or somewhere where the grass was icey was to cold for me lol. I got heart palpations. I can't handle the cold. That's how I found I'm a hot and tropical weather girl. As much as I complain about our heat, I don't want to live anywhere else.

My winter where I am is rain. Cold and rainy but it's more rain than sun. It's like a full reverse of summer. Sometimes it's thunder storms. We once had a winter with more than 40 days straight of rain. Sometimes our autumn is all rain and winter is all rain and rarely but it happens spring is all rian and then summer is super dry and droughts and bush fires. Other times it's a dry winter that's super windy. Oh and our autumn and spring is more windy and sun than anything else but I love it. Strong crisp breezes. The kind where you can wear a T Shirt and be super comfortable. I love autumn rain and wind. Autumn and spring are my favourite times of year. Spring being my birthday haha. But I wouldn't have it any other way. Also our temperatures are in celsius.

Yeah same. I like to sleep in on rainy days. I get a better nights sleep or even a nap if I badly need it. It is very relaxing. I write and do more art in the rain. I find it inspiring and mood setting. Also I had no idea what black ice was lol thanks for explaining.

The weather has been oddly great. I've still been getting mixed news but I think I will be able to retreive my stuff after it's assessed and then finally move into a new home so that's good ^w^ Other than that its a bit boring really.

I told you I started working at a hospital right? [Nothing fancy just food and stuff] and I've been walking around and my brother works there to so we were driving home tonight and I had a whole bunch of trips to the ER to drop off food and such and I turned to him on the way home and go "You know. I take many trips to the ER every single day"

Firstly a huge thanks for your shares; beautiful artwork!

I recently received a bunch of .psd exports from an artist that works in Manga Studio.  He worked in 1920 x 1080 resolution, 300dpi.  His lines are extremely poor quality and have a jagged look to them (very pixelated).  Being proficient in illustrator, myself, I was wondering if he could fix this somehow as one would in illustrator i.e. select the lines and adjust brush settings.  Is this possible?  Or do you know any other way of fixing this issue he could try?

    Again, wonderful work you do!

DraconianRain In reply to Lumenesque [2013-12-29 23:13:50 +0000 UTC]

Thank you <3 Also sounds like your friend needs to change his export settings. Also he shouldn't be working so small, for quality he should be working at full sized pages and a DPI of 600-1200 which is also printing standard. And then downsize from the larger work. The pixel look is a standard raster layer setting, however when exported properly into PSD, the lines should be smoother. If after fixing or if it is too much work, right click, change layer settings/properties and change to vector and it should improve the line work quality. I use to encounter this problem, in MSEX it looked pixelated, printed out it was beautiful line work. I make sure to change my export settings now and I haven't had the problem since when changing applications. Should all else fail, he may have to start inking in vector layers within Manga Studio. Also, make sure he is drawing on an 8bit layer and not the 1bit layer. Sometimes if it's the 1bit layer there is no way to improve the line quality other than to draw it again on 8bit or vector. Hope that helps.

Thank you!  I'll pass on the info and we'll give it a bash.  You mention export settings; could you let me know what these settings are (for exporting to .psd).  I have absolutely no knowledge of Manga Studio and the artist I'm working with seems to be a bit of a 12 o' clock flasher (i.e. technologically challenged) .
