Plank is a wooden table with a drawn face, but manages to be a cool and a well rounded character, unlike a certain Bella Swan (a human-turned-Meyerpire) who never gets Character Development for the course of four books and stays as that.

In other words, an inanimated object is far more better than a Mary Sue.
